I've never played much wih the DXF import-- but Draw12's seems a whole lot easier to play with. One of the things I like is to be able to import a DXF file from the web and plop it in for that sort of 'techy-engineering' visual flavour. It even allows you to plop 3D DXFs in at different views.
Once it's in, I add a fill or outline to the group, and then I like to rasterize (convert to Bitmap) and add effects like transparency, etc. Otherwise, there's so many vector objects (even with the Autoreduce switch on while importing) that it gets kinda cumbersome to play with.
Something to think about when you're looking for that look.
Just Google for dxf samples, and maybe a model keyword, and you'll end up with tons of stuff.
