The last time I posted here I was in desperate need of a job!!! Well I finally have one! I was hired in late October. The place is mad crazy; jobs coming in around the clock!! And I’m working in color!! Unlike my old job I was working in b/w cards and mostly using clip arts as logos. At this job, I’m working on business cards, postcards, etc.
I came in the nick of time to be hired. One of the designers whom I replaced just disappeared and I told was slow. During the beginning my boss was telling me that he expects me to do some 10 jobs or more a day. Sometimes, as I’ve discovered, things don’t go so smoothly. Especially if you are working on a computer that you know needs a new hard drive after a clean installation, lol. But I know that the company won’t spend money on new RAM or a hard drive. And the advantage? I only live about 10 minutes away, without traffic! And that was plus!
I’m one of 3 graphic artists at this printing shop whose clients are mostly realtors, financial companies, etc. The pay is good. But good if your living with parents and someone else, and just enough for paying the student loans! But I swear, 3 graphic artists are not enough. This place needs like 5 during the busy times. During the holidays it was mess!!! Now things are all right and I’m able to catch up on a few things.
So far so good; co-workers and clients/customers are warming up to me. And I hope I’ll be able to stay for at least a year or more. And I just pray that I do my best everyday and don’t screw up somewhere!

Congratulations, but god, I am so reminded of my place of employment's flaws and mein fuhrer barking at me in the first year that it isn't funny.
But hang in there, you'll speed up. One of my first jobs there (a regular client) told my boss that I was ridiculously slow. Yeah, you'd be too when your predecessor organizes old files in ridiculous ways (How the hell am I suppose to find a job for 'Beauty Source' under buty-src.cdr? First thing I did was reorganize it to make more sense.) After four years of that and a bunch of other crap.....these days I'm so lightning fast that sometimes I can sit for hours on end doing nothing. But that only leads into all the major clients coming in all at one time (gawd, WHY DO they DO THAT?). (By the way, big clients also have a sixth sense about when you're going on a long vacation and try and bombard you with work on the final day, remember that.)
But be aware that because it's a job that's only good if you're dependant on someone else (i.e. parents), MOVE ON to something good at the first opportunity you get. Otherwise, a time will come when employers won't return your calls even if you paid them, and you'll be stuck at home forever like I am ^_~

Hey congratulations, sounds like you're really enjoying the job. Being busy is good - you'll collect heaps of stuff for your portfolio in no time, and then you can move onwards and upwards!

Oh, my goodness, lol!! Sounds somewhat similiar to what I have to do when I look in the archives of CDs!! Sheesh, yo!! I don't know what someone was thinking naming certain files in a way that you won't be able to find! That's what I lot of my time is wasted! So while I'm PDFing, I usually spend the time of looking in the binders.
But that what I'm eventually going to do, have my own systeml name my files in an easy way, etc.

LOL!!! Again, the same with one particular client. The marketing director, he e-mails me like 2-5 card order a week!

I'll have to find out if I will be able to use some of the work for my portfolio. I remember hearing how certain places are very strict when it comes to that.

Remember Val, It's often easier to beg forgivness after, than to ask permission before in situations like this.
