How come when you use Jpeg compression is says the compressed file is, for example, 19.7k... but then when you look at the info of the image afterwards it is 68.8k or something like that?
Is there a tip for getting an image, like an avatar, to ACTUALLY be 19.7k?
The same with larger images... When I flattened the image, went to 'save as' and chose Jpeg, the file size was 1,965k at high quality... but then when I went to upload the image to the inernet it was actually 2,477k !
weird

Jpeg is a compression algorithm for images. If you look at .psd's you'll see the same thing.
If you want an avatar to be only 19.7k and you want it for web save as RGB .gif or .png
Your other option is to dump size and res under Image>Image Size

when I set up my avatar I select 'save for web' and save as a gif. does that help?
Power to the Old Schoolers! and btw, if you can't say something nice, shut the hell up.
Usually it's the opposite, a Jpeg gets compressed, so the file size while 'asleep' is the lower of the two. then, when you open up with say p-shop, it seems to grow because it's uncompressing.
Jpeg is good for pictures, photos...things of that nature, gif and png are better for line art like PD's avatar.
oh, and here's a tid bit of info, jpeg compression scans side to side, so if you have an image with lots of diagonals, the size grows by a lot.
Check out these examples
The first is a jpeg, 2.37K, second, same jpeg, with an angle, 5.47K
3rd is a gif, 489 bytes, 4th gif 570 bytes...little difference with the gifs.

Maybe we should have a contest for the smallest avatar file used.
