Gday...
Just started working on the illustrations for a uni project, where we have to create an illustrated storybook, in a contemporary manner. Eventually it will be taken to print and get professionally bound with a hard cover.

Its early times right now, but i thought see if i could get a bit of feedback from anyone? improvements, ect?

Anyway, critique away...

Great illustration dude! Very classic.

PP1: The hand could use some dimensions. The Pipe looks like a brush.

that looks great, did you make the vine-like stuff by hand with the pen tool, or did you do it another way?

They are nice... but pp1 needs a little more detail.
Good Luck with it.

Thanks for all the feedback guys

As for the rats.... well i haven’t got that far yet.

max_nhk: The actual pied pp1 is still in progress... i pretty much whipped up the hat, arm and the pipe for a reference to the drawing. Thanks for your comment.

MikeTheVike: The detailed stuff is done by hand with the pen tool... but i did have my friend, the wacom tablet to help. I basically made it at a big scale, then shrunk it down, making it look quite detailed. Thanks

I was thinking about just black and white illustrations for the book, do you guys think that that’s a good idea? or put some colour into it?

looks pretty good, a few of the vines or whatever need to be changed they mess with the readability, tracking and kerning

maybe you could introduce certain spots of color
like associate a character with a color
maybe the piper's hat is green, maybe a couple of the children have a primary color dress piece, and maybe the townfolk wear a toned down greyish color

or simply have the piper's hat green and keep it at that

Really nice, very stylized. On PP2 it's hard to tell what's going on with the guy staring at you, maybe it's cuz the image was so small, but he looks kind of stiff and all crowded with vines and junk.

But overall, very good composition
