Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : ipod or rio carbon?
I had the last version of an ipod and got rid of it because it had horrible battery life, this was before i realized you could actually replace it yourself.
So now I'm going to get either a RIO carbon which is small, 5GB and long long battery life (20 hrs!)
OR
The new ipod click 20GB which has more memory but still less battery life.
Apple claims to have fixed this problem but I'm still weary from my last experience.
Has anyone known any problems if they have a new one?
I do a lot of hiking so I need something to last a while...but be small and light too.

Get a MiniDisc ... they much nicer (then again, I just hate mp3 players).
You gotta help me understand the mini disc thing...
To me an mp3 player is better because it has no moving parts (unless it's a hard drive like an ipod but the movement doesn't mess up playback)
Is in general smaller
Can hold much more if you buy a decent size
doesn't cost much more
and the biggest thing to me, is you don't have to buy 'things' to put in it..it's all inside.
Am i missing something with the minidisc phenomenom?

Running ... I would agree the moving parts thing could cause annoyance, but not casual hiking (least not if you have a high anti-shock system). It is a case of sound-quality vs sound quantity really. Minidisc 'can' offer better dynamic in my opinion, though I have an early model ... and we all know what the quality of new technology is like these days (just look at how many iPods are abadndoned due to battery trouble etc - and they're dead ugly).
I'll have to agree about ipod's ugliness..I mean I like they're packaging so much more than the product...and those stupid white headphones, if people really cared about sound quality, they'd relize those are crape and get something better and less of a status symbol

Firstly ... it is just a case of what is most important:
Sound Quality?
Sound Quantity?
Battery Life?
Portable Convenience/Ant-Disturbance?
Looks?
Price (new ipod ear/head phones replacement will incur extra cost)?
Warranty?
Durability (my Sonzy RZ55 has lasted 6-8 years. I don't see an iPod lasting that long)?

I don't see the iPod's ugliness, well...unless you're talking about the Mini, I personally don't like the colors. What's really ugly is Dell and Gateway's drab and boring looking products, yuck.
iPod's headphones are no different of quality than any other headphones that come with any other product, does the job just fine for the average person. But since I am an audiophile, I've personally been wanting to pick up a set of those fancy in-ear headphones I'm always hearing about, been thinking about Sony's.
The iPod's battery is indeed replaceable and it's not hard to do (with the right tool). I do agree that the stock battery doesn't last as long as it should. My battery has sucked and I've been meaning to get a new one. On the other hand, I have left my iPod out in the cold (in the car) a lot, so that might have something to do with it.
Mine's a third gen iPod though....I don't know about the fourth gen's batteries.
I guess what it boils down to is this: how big is your music collection? If the amount of songs you want to take with you is not many, then you'd probably would want to go with that 5GB player with 20 hours. On the other hand, you'd want something bigger if that wasn't the case.
Another thing to consider: car stereo manufacterers are starting to come out with products that allow iPod integration. I have Alpine's product and while Alpine needs to work on the interface, the sound quality completely rocks and the adapter allows you to lock away your iPod in the glove compartment (which is why I leave it out in the cold more than I should). I think Pioneer has an adapter on it's way, too. My friend Eddie has a Rio and he's been considering getting an iPod so he can use it with his Alpine.
Otherwise, if you couldn't care less about iPod in the car, or if a standard AUX cable (analog) is just fine, then this wouldn't sway your decision towards the iPod.
Then there is exercise which has been brought up. It all depends on any exercise one does. I personally just set my iPod on the stairclimber machine at the gym and it's not bouncing around, but that doesn't help your case when jogging or something. Like someone brought up already, for your standard hikes, there is absolutely no need to worry. If your conscience about that, then a Flash MP3 player is definitely the way to go. Unfortunately you can't hold very much on those.
I can't give you a straight out answer on what to go with, because there's all kinds of things to factor in.

By the way, hard drive MP3 players are far more durable than one might think (a very overblown subject, in my opinion). I've accidentally dropped my 1st gen iPod three times on the ground before (a mistake I've been extra careful with on my 3rd gen), and it kept right on working right up to selling it on eBay!

Rio just does not have a very good quality, service or life expectancy record. I have read a few reviews on MP3 players and of course iPod comes out on top but what would concern me more in this thread is that Rio came out towards the bottom, if not on the bottom in most of those reviews. I have a old Rio 600 that I got off my Dad from when he first started with Audible.coma few years ago. It still works but it just isn't the same. I just got my iPod Mini from my brother this week and I have to say I am very impressed. It is easy to use and sound quality is amazing. As much as ppl think it's just because its a fad...Apple must be doing something right with their iPods if so many ppl have them. It doesn't get THAT POPULAR with it just being a fad.
So my vote goes with the iPod! http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/emoticons/thumbsup.gif

I have a 4th gen Ipod 20gig (that I got free from Stockbyte.com for purchacing 3 stock photo cds) and I love it. The battery life is at leat 10hours, I bring it into work and plug it in and shuffle thru 18.5gig of songs, comedy albums, and audio books for 8 hours and then go to the gym for 2hours and the battery is just fine. I love the way it looks (but I am a mac person), the headphones are fine for sound, not the best but I don't like the way they fit in my ears.. so I have a few different sets of headphones for different activites.
Now if I had not gotten this for free I prob would not own one... I have two kids and not a ton of $$$ so it is def a luxuary item that I thank my company for. (they don't even know I got it with the stock disks... is that wrong?)
On a side note, and this is funny. I got the ipod and took it out of the box took a look at it, turned it on, and look thru a few menus and then set it on the table. I started to read the directions and my 3yr old son picked it up and within 8 seconds had the display changed to japanise or some crap.....
How is it that kids can screw someting up so quickly???

Sony to Release PlayStation Portable
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news) (news - web sites). said Thursday it will release the PlayStation Portable in North America on March 24 and have 1 million units ready for sale in the first week.
The PSP machine, a challenger to Nintendo (news - web sites) Co.'s long-standing grip on the handheld video gaming market, will be sold as a 'value pack' for $250 in the United States and for $300 Canadian dollars. It will include numerous accessories and — for the first million sold — a copy of the 'Spider-Man 2' movie on the new Universal Media Disc format that Sony designed for the PSP.
Sony said it has already shipped 800,000 PSPs in Japan, where it went on sale on Dec. 12 for about $190.
By comparison, Nintendo's newest product, the Nintendo DS sells for $150. It was among the must-have Christmas gadgets, with more than 2.8 million sold worldwide since its release in late November.
The PSP is designed, however, with more multimedia features. It can play digital music, movies and display photos on its 4.3-inch color screen, using Sony's proprietary 1.8-gigabyte UMD discs or a Memory Stick.
With the PSP, the Tokyo-based electronics giant is targeting a wider consumer base and not just young gamers.
'It has gaming at its core, but it's not a gaming device. It's an entertainment device,' Kaz Hirai, the president of Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. said in an interview.
In addition to working with its own Sony Pictures film division, Sony is in discussions with other movie studios to support the new UMD format for future releases of movies, Hirai said.
Sony said 24 game titles will be available around the time of the launch with prices starting at $40 each.
According to market research firm DFC Intelligence, the DS and PSP are expected to drive the global portable games market from $3.9 billion in 2003 to $11.1 billion in 2007. The overall global video game industry saw sales of about $23 billion in 2003.
Hard-core gamers will propel the initial sales of the PSP, analysts say. Its unique combination of gaming and multimedia features in a 7-inch by 3-inch device that also has Wi-Fi wireless connectivity, could spur a new market for Sony, however.
'When it comes to entertainment, Sony has advantages over other players in the market,' said P.J. McNealy, analyst at American Technology Research. 'But success drives imitation, and if this thing is a wildly successful platform, you'll see knockoffs by the holidays in 2006.'
plz.. no more sales.. :( plz!!!

> Is that why PC users out number MAC users I wonder, then?
And a lot of those users are becoming highly disenchanted with their purchase. But I have a better analogy, there is one thing that a lot of iPod buyers and PC users have in common, they think each respective product is all there is. (After all, the term 'iPod' is now like the Walkman and Xerox in which people refer to any device as those). Of course, what they also both have in common is that cheapest option isn't always the best. (But that's not to say you should buy the most expensive, either.) But as you and others mentioned, that's why there are so many factors, and there is no reason not to always research your options, of course.
> Screw them both!! GET THIS!! I know its not what u were lookin for hehe but godd....
The PSP uses memory sticks, I think (or whatever might be proprietary to Sony), so space would be limited. (The UMD disk format is not something one can transfer things onto, YET anyway) Not to mention bulky to carry. But you're right Debz, the PSP is looking incredibly cool and I do think it can compete with the Nintendo DS (which is seriously hampered by a horrible selection of games at the moment). It's flaw however, is that the battery life isn't so great. (Now what is this sounding like? ^_~)

Also I would stay away from the PSP at least for 1 year or so. Sony has a terrible track record with their 1st gen gaming machines. Almost anyone who bought playstation or playstation2 right when it fist came out can testify to that.
Buy an ipod - I love mine 3293 Songs all in my pocket, not to mention apple has an excellent 1 year warranty (no questions asked replacements & repairs) and you can purchase an apple care package for $50 and replace all the batteries you want for free!

Keep digging that hole (lol) ... iPod unquestionably, is favoured by many walks of people. It does however, appear to have a short lifespan (per model that is). I wonder how many of the models so far, will still be in use in 8 years time though? What generation is the iPod at now? and it hasn't been around that long ... that doesn't say much for it as a 'good-buy', but rather ... passing trend, like those Tamagochi Pet devices.
Now Apple Powerbooks ... another story. They rock.

You know, I'm starting to question the longetivity of electronics in general. The iPod is one thing (you can replace the battery), but on another product, I recently got an XM MyFi for Christmas, and the thing died out on me thirty two days later. (I sent it into the manufacturer for repairs, may not just be the battery)
Now THAT is ridiculous. Perhaps I simply got unlucky, but for such expensive products, you'd think they'd assure better quality. It's getting to the point that for any product, you HAVE to buy an extended warranty (even though that stores use those as a scam to make money, Best Buy makes a third of their profit from them according to what I read once). I think I have an old Sony portable CD player in my junk drawer that I bought when I was fourteen, and it probably would still work today.

That is a terrible argument - apple usually makes revisions to its lineup across the board every 6 months at the conventions. Faster processors, new software, new models, cheaper prices....why should the ipod be any different? HD's have gotten smaller with larger capacities, battery technology has improved, full color screens have become cheaper - why not add them to your product line and update it with the rest of your product line. The best way to keep your market lead is to innovate and stay 1 step ahead of your competition.

Battery life is all going to depend on using the light on the ipod and what not to. But I have heard that the battery life is a fixed problem, and there are many ways of adding life to it.
I dont think they are ugly in any way, the cleanest simplest design I have seen yet, well I think the mini just plain suck cuz for 30 more bucks you can get the 20gig and there kind of ugly just the colors bother me. Messed around with alot of other mp3 to before getting an ipod, and for the ease of use there is no contest in my mind.
As fo the head phones ipods are on the high end I would say for just the stock pair, yes buying something else is much better. but have compared alot of other stock headphones to the ipod and the distortion on the other were horrible worse and worse on higher volume.

Since we're strolling down memory lane here I remember the first portable music listening device I ever saw. I used to be an avid skier since I live 30 minutes away from some of the best skiing in the world. Anyway some of the skiers started showing up with these big cassette units strapped to their chests in kind of a pouch unit. It was basically a car stereo. They had these cheezy airline type under the chin headphones. I'm not even sure who made them. This was years before the walkman and CDs. /emoticons/lol.gif
