I have a file with extention ".pmd"
Now, I am sure that is a pagemaker file, but I am not sure about which version it was created it.
My question would be how do I know which version created the file?
Can Pagemaker 7 open all previous pagemaker files? even in different languages?
I suspect that my client used some other kind of language of pagemaker to create the file, that's why my english pagemaker wouldn't open it.
Any thoughts would help.
Thanks in advance

try InDesign if you have it
but if this file is an older version of 7 (I forget what it stopped at) it should open it with little issue. Try to see if you can import it.

PMD is definitely PM7.
PM6 is 'P65' extension.
PM7 can open P65's, but not 'pkr' (I think that was the extension for PMkr 5).
PM6 comes with a utility to convert and then open PMkr 5 files.
And, if all you have is PageMaker 6.5, you can try changing a PM7 file's extension to P65, and nine out of ten times it should open fine.

I tried to open with InDesign. It wouldn't work without the plugin.
of coz I tried to open it with Pagemaker 6.5 (chinese version) it didn't work.
What else can I try?????

I got nothing with this one.
Did you try changing the file extension to 'P65' like Broacher suggested?

I do have Pagemaker 7.0
The file is only 40 Mbs. It's a brochure job that my client sent over on a CD.
At first I suspected that it might be corrupted, but all the images on the disc is fine. Maybe, it's just that one signle PM file that is burned bad......
I don't know.....
My client is pretty anxious, especially in this tough time, market is slow, it's pretty rare to get a big job on at this time of the year.

You on a mac or pc? And you mentioned using a Chinese version?
It's been a loooonnngg time since I used Pagemaker but other times I've had Quark files not work directly off the CD but opened when dragged off.
Try copy/pasting the file off the disk onto your desktop. If it copies, it should open.
If it doesn't copy, try cleaning the disk by wiping gently from the spindle hole out, not round in circles.
You may have to drag off the image files too and put em in a pile in a folder on your desktop along with the PM file.

Oh smart thinking PD.
I never work off a CD. Always put a folder on my desktop and drag everything in there and then work from it.
You so wise....!!

ESPECIALLY for PM files as it's programmed to resave as soon as you do almost anything--- zoom in, or turn a page. Be sure if you transfer to your hd that you change the attribute of the file so that it's not 'Read Only' before you open it.
