It seems that a few of us on this forum have been getting excited by how old technology is still working for us today, where as new technology seems to be letting us down left, right, and centre.
So ... I thought it'd be nice to share our memories on things that made us so excited, that we would have sold our parent's precious record collection for (thankfully not though, as I am now the proud owner, hehe).
For me ... the thing that really impressed me (and I still use in fact) is my Technics 1200 turntables. Yes, they still work today, like they did back then, just a bit more bruised as my techniques grew with me. The amazing things is, not only do they still look as good as anything today, but they have lasted for over 12 years. As for computer hard disk drives ... if only.
I miss loading frogger onto my commadore 64 through an audio cassette, i also miss ZORK, atari, coleco vision, ET, checkerboard vans (when they first came out), BMX, Ocean Pacific, A hairstyle that included a tail?, neon, John hughes, dope (the adjective), Mtv (when it stood for Music TV), You can't do that on television, freezy frekies, hypercolor, new wave, Goonies,....Ok, most of that might not be technology but I can't help it I have ADD

And the funny part about that Ulysses, is that those same Tech's that your parents probably bought for like $30, will sell for $250-$300 nowadays. I own (2) Tech 1200 MK2's, and I love them (I also spin underground trance and house) but yes, they are wonderful turntables and will last you for many more years to come.
As for me, I miss striped socks, big hair, bon bon's, and being a kid.

I remember when we thought CD-ROMs were out of the space age. I was probably 10 at the time.
We had one of the old Nintendo systems. I thought Mario 3 was 'da bomb. You could fly in that one.

Buying a CD player and going, 'Aw, damn, now I gotta buy more CD's'
You can still play Zork. They released the whole series for Mac. Gold Edition or something like that.
I liked Leather Goddesses of Phobos best though.
Wizardry was fun too. You can still play Wizardry if you get an emulator. Anyone remember 'the darkness'? llld, llld, ddddddd

I fondly remember the days when television didn't insist on putting stupid graphics and watermarks all over the screen. Whenever I pop in an old tape and see an untouched program, I feel so nostalgic.
I loved television in the late 80s and through much of the 90s. I can hardly stand it today.

Well, there is one exception...Tivo is extremely nice and I mostly 'skim' shows. I'm not sure if it will ever happen (doubtful), but advertisers have been raising stink about Tivo and want the ability to fast forward through commercials disabled. (I doubt that would ever happen, there would be so many ways around that)

Speaking of record players, when I was five, I used to have a record player (so I could play those children's audio books that came in Hardee's kids meals, anyone remember those? Remember the Gremlin's books/records?). Now that record player had Michael Jackson on the lip/cover. As I look back on that now, I realize just how wrong that looks ;)
Although I wish I still had that record player, I bet it would be worth some bucks.

I agree _Tyger_ ... quite some memories that we've all shared. Just why is it though, that recent generations have become obsessed with the past? I remember being a University student, and it seemed to be the best way to break the ice, get to know everyone, and determine who has similar interests as one's self.
The most important concern, is why do so many children get bored these days? we used to never have enough time in the day to do things back when I was a child. Is the nanny society to blame? Do children need to be allowed to climb trees again? and have more playing fields? Do we as creative individuals that remember and value these memories we have, have any hope of making a difference? like Scooby Doo and Space Hoppers had on all of us?
i think technology makes us lazier :/ or TV..

The problem seems not to be technology, Debz ... it has always been with us. No, the problem is our growing inability to use it properly. Well ... that is what I think [sitting quite bored, having realised it is too late in the evening to be pondering these ideas].

I remember when I was a kid that I used to spend every minute I could outside, climbing trees, playing kickball / soccer / hide and seek/knock down the neighbors or trying to befriend strange cats and dogs that wandered into the yard. Even in the winter I would be out until I had no feeling left in my fingers or toes and my mother would have to practically DRAG me into the house.
During those times I was often alone and would make up stories about things that were happening or what those things meant. I also read a lot.
I really attribute a lot of my creativity as an adult to the time I spent using my imagination when I was little.

Here's a question nobody seems to remember ... who/ when was the last time you called somebody and asked 'is --- coming out to play?'
And, wha twas the last tree you climbed?
Why did we suddenly stop doing these things? I certainly remember the last time I had sex, but not these questions ...

yeah i know what you mean, 'playing' in it's innocence. Now i do still 'play' things like hockey, b-ball etc. but it's more adult games. There are a few things we've replaced them with in sports, paintball, things like that. Most people don't realize the act of 'playing' is good for the soul so to speak. It enables us to still imagine and create our realities. That's why I love playing with my nieces and nephews...it's a good excuse to play with them and their toys. Not that i need an excuse.

I miss lots of cartoons. Wow, I used to love them. Thunder Cats, Mysterious Cities of Gold (how did that condor ever fly I wonder now?), Care Bears (ok, so I was a bit of a girl when I was a child), Dungeons and Dragons and the Gummi Bears (how cool was that juice?!!) I also miss Airwolf, The A Team and Knight Rider when none of them seemed horribly cheesy, just good entertaining. I also miss Saturday afternoons watching the British Wrestling - ahhhh!
I miss sleepovers too, trying to build igloos every winter, even though we don't get enough snow or could ever figure out how to make it not fall over.
I miss Manic Miner on my brother's ZX Spectrum and Chucky Egg and Donkey Kong. I miss being thrilled by having 1Mb RAM on my computer!
I miss being able to go outside and find something to do without even thinking about it. I think a number of mud pie throwing competitions started that way. And I miss my Mum throwing me out and telling me not to come back til I was hungry on the weekend.
Ah blissful days of ignorance and over active imaginations

you know what came to mind, remember when you would get someone to flinch and you'd say..... rock! or the other saying sike (or psyche, or syke i don't know how it's properly spelled). The 'Rock' one reminds me of my breakdancing days. I was 9 when i started breaking. That was so cool and fun then because that's how we settled disputes back then between groups or crews as we said back then. I remember if someone had a problem with another guy or group we'd whip out the ghetto blaster and some cardboard and the 'Breakin' would settle it. ha...ha...he....my street name was Vicious Vex and i was part of a group called New Generation, then was later changed to Hip Hop Rockers.
I think i'm going to dig up Beat Street. Man i'm getting excited just thinking of that battle between the New York City Breakers and Rock Steady hearing the theme song Breakers Revenge..

I don't think I miss ska music as much as I miss the time in my life it represents. Yes ska music can still be bought, but most of the other stuff mentioned can be too. Thats why e-bay is so popular....it gives people a chance to re-purchase our childhoods. Will playing with Optumus Prime on your living room carpet be as fun as you had when your were 5......probably not......but it can rekindle fond memories of times past. A time when nothing mattered and you were not weighed down by the problems & pressures of daily life.
I wonder if they have Optumus Prime's hands & gun on ebay......I lost mine........
You know, there's like a butt-load of gangs on this forum. This one gang kept wanting me to join because I'm pretty good with a bo staff.

Oooo yeah Debz - I had this amazing pair of hot pink clip on earrings. Lordy me they were hideous, but I thought they were the bees knees and was never seen without them. I'm kinda hoping I've still got them somewhere at my parents' house.
I also lived in Doc Martins when I was 13-15ish. You could never get me out of them. I went to a friend's wedding with them on and she wasn't impressed!

LOL! yeah when i was like 14ish i had these black boots with diff color sparkley shoe laces. (me and my best friend swapped 1 of each lace so we had matching mis-matching laces.) and then i wore a plastic ring on the shoe, me and her got them outta those machines and wore em as best friend type things. lol
plz.. no more sales.. :( plz!!!

Debz... I wear vans still today! My fav. shoes!! Their expensive these days!
I remember 9-10ish, we pinned our jeans together at the bottom. the person with the most pins was the coolest and the people who rolled the jeans, they wern't so popular.
pigtails... I miss pigtails
and legwarmers.... it would be so much warmer these days with them!
But they are comin back, you just wait.... the pigtails off to the side have already come back.

And they go smashing with deliberately ripped jeans that have patches of another material sewed underneath them. And with basketball boots.
