Hello, I'm the layout staff for a small college newspaper (8-16 pages a week, usually 12). We currently use Pagemaker 7. I just found a copy of InDesign 1.5 on our shelf.

Should I switch to InDesign 1.5 or stay with PM7? I've heard good things about the latest version of InDesign, but I don't think that upgrade is in our budget.

hi darkmika, welcome to the forum! /emoticons/cheers.gif

check out this thread: www.graphicdesignforum.com/default.aspx?f=8&m=105188&g=105199#m105199 (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/default.aspx?f=8&m=105188&g=105199#m105199)

InDesign is a great up and coming program rapidly gaining popularity, but PageMaker has been discontinued and is on it's way out. I use ID 2 at work, but have never tried 1.5 - do you outsource your work for printing or print it in house? I suppose that would make a difference.

if you can't say something nice, shut the hell up.

We outsource with a hardcopy, so the software shouldn't affect that at all. We print out the pages, put them in an envelope, and the printer picks them up and drops off the papers the next day.

Oh, and I should note that we're using Windows 2000 and XP.

Thank you for the link. I think perhaps the best thing to do is install it and play around with it a bit.

I never tried InD v1.5. I haven't heard good things about it. At least when compared to InD v2 or v3. It took a while for InD v2 to catch on because people remembered 1.5 and didn't want to buy it.

Pagemaker is no longer being developed by Adobe. You really should start thinking about upgrading soon. If you own any version of Photoshop, the Adobe Creative Suite Pro version with Pagemaker import plugin (it's a special package) is highly recommended.

PD is a grande format digital print dude. His advice/opinions may not apply to the 4color/offset/web world of printing

Yeah..what PD said. I used ID 1.5 when I worked for a print shop and it was slow as molasses. I wouldn't go there but I wouldn't stay with PM7 either. If I were you, I would upgrade to ID CS. Vast improvement over the other versions from what I can tell so far, and not slow like the older versions!

Print hard copies and send em to the printer! Haa! That's what we use to do when I started out where I am (ok well after we moved past the "paste up with wax roller days)...I remember those days!! We've come a long way at that lil place I work at! Whew!!
Now its PDFs for me...all the way! I'm not looking back...newp! Saving some trees too! LOTS! LOL!
