You know...I really don't see how a missile defence shield would help either country. It's not the cold war. Who owns ICBM's today anyway? (Those are ballistic missiles that can hit targets anywhere in the world). Russia's not going to nuke anyone anymore so who does that leave?

The article speaks of anti-US and anti-Canadianism in the respective countries. Well....duh. We don't like some US policy and the US doesn't like the fact that we haven't supported them. I don't think it's required that this be the case anyway...we can disagree and still be friends. I blame it on the media if there's any negative sentiments between the 2 countries. I also don't think it's a good idea for my Prime Minister to be making this deal just to patch up relations with the US. I'd rather they do some of the other listed things, like increased our defense budget, or increased the money put into the border and such.

Also, does anyone know what "biometric" identification for border users is? Sounds like something to do with a piece of ID inside you or something...that's scary.

So yeah...do we really need a missile defense shield? I'd rather have one for asteroids.

Missile Defense is a huge waste of money - It didn't work for Regan & it won't work today either. It is a way for Republicans to funnel lots of tax money into defense contractors that they have crooked deals with or stock in.

Actually Biometrics today does not need anything inserted into your body - it refers to biological ways to identify you. Fingerprints, retinal scans, facial recognition, typing rhythm stuff like that.

i've been wrong before, but i thought that paul martin had stated categorically that canada will not be supporting the missile defense sheild in any way.

what 'trans-border' emergencies are they talking about? canada is world renouned for it's humanitarian aid and peace-keeping endeavours. and who, exactly, was at this 'major conference'?

to be honest, and i am NOT america-bashing here, i think it's time that canada stopped looking to the US for most things. an example: the ban on canadian beef. why should we care whether the americans will buy our beef or not? our government should start funding our farmers in an effort to secure the asian market. THAT's what they should be doing. ever since free-trade, (in my short memory, anyways), canada's been getting boned by the states. and it's our fault. stop playing the game.

and if we want ANY sort of defence shield, it should be one to keep out the acid rain from a rather large, unnamed, industrial neighbour. *ahem* oh well. when they finally invade us for our 'fresh' water supplies, at least it'll taste like crap.

Martin may get politically pressured into supporting the damn thing.

Personally I am all for it so long as the border opens up to Canadian (albertan) cows and soft wood lumber. Both industries need that damn border opened back up.

In terms of the cows, most of the cows here in alberta are slaughtered and packaged in the states leaving those factories that are in the states, have to lay people off! That is the big reason that the border needs to be opened up. Granted we are in the process to slaughter the animals here, but at the same time we do not have the resources to package the damn things.

Bring on the missles so long as we can get that damn border opened up again!

Know I only want to border opened, the missles I see as means to an end. And if it doesn't cost Canada anything except the land, go for it...

I also read an article today about how the US is going into research and production of new, 'sturdier' Nuclear weapons, in light of the fact that the 10, 000 weapons in it's arsenal now are becoming aged and their operational status is questionable.

10 000 nukes...imagine what we could use those for...!

I actually tried to apply for citizenship to Canada, but there is some serious back up going on there. Apparently quite a few Americans had the same idea.

Fortunately for me, not a lot of Americans want to be so far from their families, so they're not beating down the doors of the New Zealand immigration department.
