She's running Windows 2000, on a PIII 500 - 600 mhz (not sure which). It has about 256 megs of RAM.

It's having start up problems..it seems as though Windows explorer isn't booting up properly, causing her computer to essentialy not run (looks like it's locking up). Restarting by hitting ctrl+alt+del seems to be hit and miss. The one time I was able to get it running, I ran 3 different spyware programs, hoping that would clean it up, as well as scan disk. No dice...it seems the initial boot sequence may be corrupted.

Thing is, she doesn't own the Win 2000 cd...

So what are my options? Any ideas?

Try replacing the mouse ... dying mice always cause irratic freezes, and other such oddities.
Otherwise, she really needs to repair the system, with a restore. You'll need to put a Win 2000 cd on her system though, to do that.

You tried defragging it too?

It could also be a virus that's doing this. Have you also tried an anti-viral test?

Jack-ass...I was waiting for a 'mac' comment.

I'll try the mouse thing Uly...though I also suspect a repair will require a window's cd.

She has anti-virus protection, just not sure how up-to-date it is.

Does she have a windows 98 boot disk? you can possibly use that as a startup. otherwise I would suggest gettng her a copy of XP and just installing that. I think I have seen legit copies go for as little as $75, so just look around.

it could be literally a number of different things, could be a bad sector on her hardrive. in which case you will need that and a new OS disk. good luck man.

Unfortunately Magnus, D-Frag is right ... under the circumstances, it could actually be an attribute of any number of causes.

Yeah, I know...and without you guys seeing it or working on it....

I'll figure something out.

Thanks!

You could start it up in safe mode and try cleaning out the startup programs.
