Ok here's my problem. about a year before I took my current job my current coworkers switched from using Macs to PCs (corporate standardization decision). No one bothered to put file extensions on any of the files that they were using. Everything has to be renamed in order to bring it over to the PC and use it. There is about 80gig worth of files without extensions on an old Mac and I'm the only one with access. Everytime someone needs a file I have to find it, rename it and copy it over to our PC network. This happens ALOT and it annoys the hell out of me!

My question is this...is there any software or batch processing script for the Mac (OSX) that I can run to go in and add the correct extensions to all of the Mac files? Example: I tell it to find all InDesign Files and add the .indd extension.

Thanks in advance.

i think there is an option Built into OS X that will add file extentions to every file name.
i can't remeber exactly where it is though, but i thought i remeber seeing it as a checkbox somewhere.

You can tell it to hide or display the file extension when saving a file but I need to rename several thousand files with the appropriate extension. This is turning out to be a big pain in the butt.

Thanks for the reply.

The only thing I found is this associate.com/01_files/File_Disk_Utilities.shtml (http://associate.com/01_files/File_Disk_Utilities.shtml), look at the bottom for something called SuffIt (this is not the file compression program StuffIt) It's 'Suff' 'It'. It only runs in classic though and it seems to only recognize 'older' file types, not InDesign and such. but it may help with some of the renaming. I make no guarnatees that it'll work

You can try bringing all the files over and then going to open with and choosing the app to open it with and then make sure to select change all, Not sure if this will work, If mac will recognized just the illy files or ps files or not, but it is a very quick way to change so it is worth a try

Last case go to applescript.net and search for a script to add the extensions... if you can't find one I maybe able to help get you a sample and then you can take it from there.

What we are going to do here is go back,
