Just wondering why some font names change to numbers when they are moved or copied and if there is a way prevent that from happening.

This is more annoying than a real 'issue' I guess but if there's a way to avoid it, I'd sure appreciate hearing it.

If it wasn't for the last minute nothing would ever get done.

Never seen this. What OS? Where were you copying/moving fonts to/from?

I'm on a PC - XP. At the moment I'm just trying to gather up all my fonts from the various applications or cds they came on (and the ones currently installed on my laptop and desktop) and make a backup cd where they are all in one place -- but I've noticed it before when I would try to copy fonts (for a project I was working on) from the system font folder on my desktop and move to my laptop.

If it wasn't for the last minute nothing would ever get done.

Have you tried zipping them up, then extracting the zip to the fonts directory? Seems like some corruption is occuring to me ... or, when you're copying, an unfriendly font is being used as your system's default font, thus appearing like the symbols you describe (this happened a few times, when I was first learning how to group fonts in ATM).

By zipping up your fonts, you should also be able to help assertain at what stage, the fonts are messing up. But having just thought about it ... do you mean the font filenames? or the font names when you select them in software?

What is happening is a font like 'Bitstream Arrus BT' when removed from my laptop system font folder and put into separate folder for collection purposes becomes 'tt1145m_.ttf' but then when installed into my desktop computer's system fonts, it shows the name again. So, if I'm looking for a specific font in the folder I've made for collecting them all in one place some of the names are no longer there - they've become a number.

No, I haven't tried zipping them and I really don't have a clue how to manage fonts - mine are a mess. :(
(Do we have a thread that gives a good explanation of how to manage your fonts properly?)

I assume by 'ATM' you mean Adobe Type Manager? I don't have and haven't really used. When I used to work on a Mac I had to use the suitcase method but I always kinda thought that was a pain.

I understand now ... yes, Windows (not sure about mac) font directory is not a true folder. What I mean is, in XP's font folder, you actually have two names of sorts; Font Name (legable name) and the filename (with .tff extension etc).

The only way to have keep the Font Name, would be to rename them all ... not really worth it though, unless it is really important to you. I just have all fonts copied to the fonts folder, and have ATM (Adobe Type Manager) manage them into groups. This way, I can have all my fonts installed, but only active when I need them (sorted by group/project etc).

Indeed, font filenames are messy, and it would be a pain in the neck to rename them all to their true Font Name, but it is better if you manage them with something like ATM. That way, ATM or other software would just use the fonts you wish to use from the fonts folder, and Adobe software will also automatically enable the fonts for files as you open them (very ncie feature, which saves you looking for the font, and copying it to the fonts folder, as you could just have them all there all the time ... just that ATM will tell windows only to use certain ones, as and when you/files need them).

ah so.

well, it's only a pain when I'm looking for a specific font that has happened to change - which isn't all that many - and most times it doesn't matter, except when I'm in a hurry and then it's really annoying. Maybe I need to think about getting ATM - sounds like a better way to go.

Thanks for striving to understand - and help me make more sense of it - I appreciate it!

ATM is going really cheap on eBay right now ... grab yourself a bargain.
