yeah, i have a job interview with AZ's largest commercial real estate company on monday. they want me to head their marketing department.
here is the deal, he said alot of it was design, but that I would be doing marketing things too....so what does that actually entail?
I told him I have 10 years of sales experience, and that im sure that would help with meeting possible clientel, but im really worried im not going to be able to answer alot of marketing type questions, im not even 100% sure on exactly what a marketing director does.
im a very quick learner and imagine that I can pick this up pretty quickly, but I wanted to know if anyone here had any links to articles relating to a daily job as a marketing director or can offer any advice or help.
thanks!

Where I work I'm asked to 'help' with marketing ideas and such, i work at a place where everyone wears to many hats. This is my take on it. Marketing is more of an overall picture to making something sell. Design is a piece of that but must encompass the original marketing idea.
Marketing can be events, budget, much more relations with sales teams and other staff. It's getting a handle on the big picture, what needs to be done to make things work.
I hope that helps a bit. As far as books I like the tipping point. It's not directly related to marketing but everyone invloved in it should read it.

Largest Commercial realestate, just sounds like another gimmic, way to many commercial real estate out there to go with
You'll be finding areas on where to spend money on marketing, sales, design, ads, managing accounts, billing, alot of checking past years of high sales, low sales, what went good and bad, seasonal purchasing and building, you usually get to do desing but I dont know about alot of it. Kind of like an art director but with more sales etc.
But who knows ads can always be decieving to, alot of boring but necessary follow ups, there are so many differences in this or any sales, marketing title that you are gonna have to get a feel for it when you walk in the door. There are thousands of links to check out. But I would spend most of the time researching the company. If they are as big and bold as you say they are you should be able to get there annual reporst off the web and other comments from clients, etc.
good luck

Yah events will be the fun part but maybe take up 15 to 20 percent of your work load at the most(usually)
You may have alot of people on your side for the budget side and you might not

This is EXACTLY what my career counselor always told me. Go into the interview knowing as much about the company as possible. Good advice.
What they are going to want is someone who knows how to think creatively and solve problems. When I hear 'marketing' I think 'branding', and have read some excellent articles on www.creativelatitude.com (http://www.creativelatitude.com) - so you might find that helpful too.
Good luck!

I always got the impression that the marketing people I went to school with were more fiscally creative then visually creative. Seems like they are required to stretch the most out of an advertising dollar and come up with ingenious schemes and scams to boost sales.
Good luck with your interview!

oh, i'm sure you already know this but incase you don't.. its WAY cheaper to get the whole marketting campaines printed matirial all ran at the same time (i.e. one giant gang up job, all on the same stock.. biz cards, direct mailers, price sheets, brochures, flyers..).
that has droped our advertising cost down to a 1/10 of what it was last year (seriously)

basically D.. if you get the job. Have fun with it. Come up with all crazy ides on how to get the word out on the company. that is basically what you will have to do and implement them.
might be fun depending how liberal or conservative they are there.

Ummm it went alright. The interview lasted 15 minutes, and my Mom tells me thats a good thing. It was just an initial first interview to weed out the hopeless and get a feel for the tons of interviewees they had. I tripped over my words a couple times, and he didn't look all the way through my portfolio, but he seemed nice, and I think I was probably one of the first 10 people they had interviewed.
Anyways, I dropped a thank you letter in the mailbox yesterday when I got back. My resume, cover letter, thank you letter and envelope are all custom designed and printed and they look hott like whoah. So im hoping mix that 'look' with the pimp ass suit I wore, and my experience, and hope that I get one of the jobs. They are highering for a JR level designer, a SR level designer, and a department head.
Ill keep ya all updated, I start my other job on Wednesday.

Boscow~ I made a logo of sorts out of my initials, then made a letterhead out of it. I then used that design in EVERYTHING I send out, samples, resume, cover letter, thank you letter and envelope are all designed using my logo and color scheme. It makes it look uniform and proffesional, just like what a real business would send out.

Yah I know, custom designed resume, letterhead, etc.........just never heard a designers stuff labled like that it sounded kinda cheesy to me. Is your resume filled with grahics and such? I have yet to see a resume or cover letter etc. like that to work.
