I need to make a 20 page Quark document into a pdf that can be used on the web. My problem is getting all the pictures to show up with good quality, while keeping the file size down for people to download and view. There are A LOT of pictures in this document. It is a Real Estate Agent Profile piece. When I sent this document to the printer, the file size ended up being 28MB. I changed the settings in distiller to get a smaller file and got it down to 1.4MB but the quality of the pictures aren't good. Is there a trick to doing what I need. Thanks for your help.

What happens when you knock all the images down to web 72dpi first?
Or maybe break it up into sections for download?
Out of curiousity, what's an Agent Profile piece? A list of agents with pictures of agents, or the multiple properties they are selling? (trying to get an idea of the number of images you are working with)
Is this going to be a scheduled recurring piece with updates, or a one time listing?

Maybe D-Zine will be along eventually. She does Quark pdf's all day long. It's the weekend so be patient.

PD is a grande format digital print dude. His advice/opinions may not apply to the 4color/offset/web world of printing

what OS you working and platform?

but PD is right. 72 dpi should be fine as long as there is no printing involved. there should be a setting in distiller that says SCREEN. that is for screen only pdf's. It still going to be a over a meg (that seems to be the cut off point). but not bad. I did a 12 page PDF media kit that was image heavy and it ended up being about 1.2 megs.

We have our publication available online for download as PDF (64 pages on average) and its 11.6mb this week.

What did you change your Distiller settings to when you changed them and got the 1.4mb with shotty images? They key is in your Distiller settings somewhere. Can you give us a breakdown of what you changed and your settings? Like Joe said - set it to screen should do it for you but I was wondering if that's what you did to get the shotty images?!!?

Thank you all for your responses. I had changed the compression of images to 72 dpi for images over 100 dpi. When I changed the quality of compression to 'Maximum' instead of medium, it helped out a lot. We do this piece once a year and for now it has been deemed 'Good Enough.' I will try distilling using the 'SCREEN' settings. Thanks again.

Here are my settings...

DDAP.org has the highest setting for billboards and very fine printing

AdSEND - options distributed for newspapers

screen res - distributed for screen viewing

These options are from Distiller 6 for mac. I could provide screenshots for the PC people.

/DesktopModules/dotNetBB/emoticons/weep.gif I wrote the in hopes to give out the joboptions but I get this message.
* You cannot upload files that use MIME type : application/x-stuffit. </font>

I could send the options to you if you ask. Just refer to the above after extracting. I use iChat/AIM or PM to get them sent.
