Hi,

I hope that someone can help. I am running Quark 6.0 on Windows XP with a HP Deskjet (http://forum.planetpdf.com/webboard/wbpx.dll/~planetpdfforum/spell?Deskjet,85&b=-1&a=0&f=0&h=0&t=6517773&p=0&i=0&e=0&c=7&s=Quark+6. 0+and+Export+to+PDF+problem) 930C printer.

Every time I try to export a layout as a PDF, I get the following message:

"QuarkXPress (tm (http://forum.planetpdf.com/webboard/wbpx.dll/~planetpdfforum/spell?tm,202&b=-1&a=0&f=0&h=0&t=6517773&p=0&i=0&e=0&c=7&s=Quark+6. 0+and+Export+to+PDF+problem))
To save a layout as a PDF file, a Postscript printer must be set up to print to a file."

Can anyone tell me what this means and how I can export to PDF?

You can make your PDF several ways. My advice is to use Distiller if you have it. Set your Quark preferances to create postscript file for later distilling. Then after the PS file is created just drag it into Distiller (remember you set your Distiller settings accurately tho!).

Do you have Distiller? If not, there are other options, but its better - espiecally with Quark, if you use Distiller.

You can print to file but you need to have 'Adobe PDF' chosen as your printer description. If you have Acrobat installed, it should give you that PPD as an option.

95% of the time just exporting to PDF in Quark will give you problems/issues.

just supporting what d-zine has said:

Export PDF function in quark is not a printable pdf. You can use it for on screen proofing for a client. Most printers reject that PDF.
1. Go to your preferences
2. Go to the PDF part and like she said, Select create postscript for later distilling.
3. You also need to set the options. Find out where the PDF is being printed to get those options.

Your best bet is to have someone on the phone to walk you through the settings.

If you don't own distiller, there are online services to create the PDF's for you.

What we are going to do here is go back,
way back,
back in time.

Also your press can save the distiller options, email them to you and then you can import that file into Distiller so you have it all set up by them!
That's how I do it at work bc then I know i have the setting right that they require.

You need to have a postscript printer installed. If you don't you can use the
Adobe PDF printer that's installed with the full version of Acrobat. If you
have neither of these, you can use a service online that'll make your PDF
for you like PDF to Go, or PDF 9.99, etc... None are as good as the real
Acrobat Professional version of Distiller IMHO.

Another option is to create a Virtual Printer, but I'm not really sure how to
do that on a PC. I've only made them on a Mac.

Problem solved. QXpress requires availability of PostScript printer to produce PDF, but is happy with "Virtual" printer. This is info from QXpress Tech Service on printer addition to Windows

1. Go to Start, Pinters/Fax, select "Add Printer" - Wizard opens
2. Select "Local Printer Option"
3 Deselect "Automatically Detect and Install" box.
4. Select "Port" tab and choose "File" port
5. in Printer list, select HP under manufacturer. I selected HP Color Laserjet PS in printer option since I believe that PS refers to PostScript.
6. Printer Driver loads, finish Wizard.
7. Printer/fax screen should now show new printer with 3.5" Floppy symbol.
8. QXpress produces PDF without having to specifically designate new printer. I had to redo some of my changes made to Preferences in my foolish attempts to solve problem before adding virtual printer.

More help available from Jerry Wright at QXpress Cust. Service.
