There was a show on in the UK called Brass Eye - quite controversial and when one of their sketches was rejected by the television controller Michael Grade the man behind the show decided to do a subliminal message during a sketch. Halfway through on a bright green background the message 'Grade is a c**t' came up.
Apparently no-one saw it and you had to have high quality digital equipment to see it but it certainly got him the publicity he wanted!!

Makes you wonder if rival companies ever use that kind of stuff for industrial sabotage. Papa John's training special ops graphic designers to plant as moles at the Pizza Hut corporate head quarters to spell out buy Papa John's pizza with peperoni letters in Pizza Hut Ads. I actually have a funny true story about subliminal messages... it is a much more innocent story than the Coke one though! /DesktopModules/dotNetBB/emoticons/lol.gif
When I applied for my current job I revamped my portfolio, and included an egyptian cat illustration I had drawn and vectorized. It looked way too plain on a white background, so I used a hieroglyphic font to add a little bit of background.
It was the first time I had included this piece, and I am convinced it got me the job. What did the hieroglyphics in the background day?

I have added my name into quite a few images. if there is a photo with mags on a table or paintings on the wall I also add my name in there somewhere.
I used to hide subliminal messages in all of my essays that i submitted for school, it was quite painstaking but it was worth it! e.g. tiny fonts, using text to mask sentences telling my teacher that they were going to give me an A, even though i hate them.
Has anybody tried those magic eye things?
i hate shields.

An interesting 'secret feature' that one of my more experienced TV animator friends told me concerned the wavy, kind of pulsing backgrounds frequently used on certain animations- It's usually a waving silk banner, or water of some sort.
Her secret? Porn. Slap a colour filter on it, and blur the crap out of it, and you get a steady, rythmic BG. Very useful.

Ad agencies in the 70's tested subliminal messaging on cinema goers. the message read 'buy ice-cream' throughout the first part of the film. resulted in alot of people leaving because they felt cold....

There is a large poster out there for a cartoon 'skateboard-crew' which contained a lot of graffiti. There was graffiti samples supplied with the styleguide but I used a lot of them an didn't want to repeat too many so obviously some of the graffiti was self created for my personal choice.. like my name, LFC rule (Liverpool football club), wifes name...etc... It got passed and I've seen it in shops. Nice to know I got away with it...
... I was trying to think of the name... It was 'No Rules' or 'No rulez Crew' something like that.

Why is it red raw, that three of the characters have ONE GIANT (and quite scary) eye? Very disturbing ... otherwise, I absolutely love the style.

^ The Characters were provided to me for the artwork. I have no idea why the eyes are like that! I guess it's because they're cool and have angst...
If you find the 'No rules - Get Phat' GB advance game i was given the cover of that as inspiration and told to create 3 different environments for them to be 'Hangin' in.
here it is...

Weird that subliminal messaging isn't actually illegal (at least, as far as I've been informed). If it can be disciplined, it could be very easily abused.

subliminal messages are illegal in television advertising. there's a minimum limit on the length of time an image can appear on screen.

Only in 'advertising'? Surely they should also be illegal in all forms of media then ... afterall, we all know that the sharing of infromation ... knowledge ... is advertising in it's truest form. How do these stupid beurocrats make half-baked laws up?
i probably made an error in phrasing that. sorry uly
