Greetings;

I am doing some contract IT work and have a dilemma.

My client is working on a new Mac G5, (with some version of OS X, naturally) with PhotoShop CS and Quark 6.0

He created a ‘line drawing’ in PS, using the ‘line tool’ (NOT the Pen tool), using Image/Mode/Bitmap, and saved it as a .tif (600dpi).

When he prints directly from PS, he gets a decent enough image for what he needs. However, when he places the piece in to Quark, it does not print well. It gets ‘muddied’- spaces fill in, jaggies, etc.

He is using a Brother HL1440 printer that he says is NOT postscript. He said the printer he was using previously with his 8500 or 9500 was also NOT postscript, but he never encountered this situation.

I went to Edit/Print Styles/Edit Options and made sure he was on the appropriate driver and settings, including Data type: Binary, and OPI selected. However, when I go to Print, and look at the Options, Data is blank, and grayed out, as is OPI. Glenn believes that this is the issue. I wonder if there is a problem with the printer not being postscript. He has no other printer, so I can’t see how it prints from a PS printer.

I did not find anything like an ‘Enhanced Preview’, and it shows that the OPI extension IS loaded and functioning.

Any clues or tips would be appreciated.

Thanx.

Are you sure it is in bitmap? If it is in grayscale its possible that the muddiness is the halftone dots. Also check the resolution in the print screen - it may be set to the lowest setting which is probably 300dpi. I have also had problems printing out of Quark 6 when high resolution is checked for screen viewing. Item > Preview Resolution > Low Resolution

Hope this helps

under your print dialogue box in QuarkXpress 6 under options make sure that 'Full resolution TIFF Output' is selected.

Not only that but the line tool is pretty inherently aliased to some degree in Photoshop. Generally speaking Photoshop shouldn't be used to create anything with crisp line work because it's all raster. If you're doing line work you generally want to stick with vector like Illustrator or Freehand. Postscript shouldn't be the problem.

Try bumping up the resolution to 800dpi or higher, no more than 1000dpi... or post the file so we can look at it... if it is at all possible.

What we are going to do here is go back,
way back,
back in time.
