I've been browsing the fonts at www.1001freefonts.com and was wondering if anyone ever uses free fonts? Most of them are really good. Anyone contact the creater and ask for permission to use it in a commercial work?

i have, but only when i was a relative noob, and mainly in 'gak' for commercials and stuff where it'll never be seen. the thing about free fonts is that everyone and their dog has them, so they end up looking pretty cheap - no matter how good your design is.

The other thing about free fonts is they don't always rip correctly. about 1 in 4 is garbage at our last count.
Most of those free font websites have a little blurb somewhere that you have to contact the developer and pay a use fee if you use it commercially (ie to make money for yourself or anyone else).

PrintDriver is absolutely right, if you 'HAVE' to use them, convert to outlines. And depending on the font, every once in a while they might not even convert correctly.
