recently i've heard talk about people sometimes loosing fonts in their pdfs because the pdfs were not distilled correctly.

could some one go over this process for me, how to correctly distill pdfs? except for quark, i don't think i've really ever used distiller before, or is it built into illustrator and indesign? thanks!

There are several ways you can create a PDF.
With Quark, your best bet is to either
1. print to file (with 'Adobe PDF' chosen as your PPD) or,
2. export to PDF with your Quark PDF preferances set to 'create postscript for later distilling'.
Once that postscript file is created, drag that into Distiller and it will create your PDF.

If you JUST 'export to PDF' in Quark then all it is using a PDF Writer to create your PDF - that is basically just a print driver installed on your computer, and it does not use the postscript language, which means its no good for graphic intensive files.

Your Distiller settings will depend on what you plan to do with that file. If you are having font issues, you need to be sure that in your Distiller settings, you have located your font folder on your hard drives and added your fonts so that they can be embedded. You also need to be sure to check the box that says 'embedd all fonts' and 'subset embedded fonts when fonts are below 100%'.

The rest of your distiller settings will depend on what your project is and what your press requires.
Best bet is to call them to help you get your settings accurate for what they need!

As for InDesign and Illustrator - they (I think) are using 'Adobe PDF' (NOT a PDF Writer) which uses the postscript language. I have yet to have any issues creating a PDF from any Adobe apps.

JUST in case you are unsure of what the postscript language is..here's a good link for you k!

Specs please? MAC/PC/OS9/OSX???

This is the long way I had learned from Adobe tech support.
You need Adobe Acrobat to distill .ps files. Then set up a folder to be watched, Distiller will watch a folder for Postscript (.ps) files. And lastly the job options.

Illustrator when you save as PDF, there are options to embed fonts. or just convert to outlines.

In ID you do the same as quark, but... the dialogs are different.
In Print dialog set printer to postscript file, ppd to Adobe PDF.
Then in the graphics section: Send Data, All; Download, Complete; Check, Download ppd fonts; Postscript Level 2(unless told otherwise): Data Format Binary.
Click Save.

If you need Mac Distiller6 options I can send mine to you
or
Talk to the vendor about what options you need, they might have a set for you. (recommended)

That should work. But I don't have a full version to really test it.

What we are going to do here is go back,
way back,
back in time.

Hope this helps, it is a pdf file one of my printers gave me and it works for all of the print shops I use.

If you use quark 6 just read the distiller side and print your file to a postscript and distill later
