Hi all! I'm teaching a DTP class for a few friends and would really like some examples to show of bad layout and design. Also, if there are a few good ones I'd be interested in them too. Thanks! This place looks like it will be a great resource.

Hello 11210-
My advice is to look in your junk mail pile. Things in there will run the gamut from good to bad. Especially in those postcard packs you get. Some are very nicely thought out and designed well, some are worse than awful.
This is the type of question that could go down in flames.
Let's try to keep it nice please.
PD is a grande format digital print dude. His advice/opinions may not apply to the 4color/offset/web world of printing

Bad Layout...start with a supermarket flyer, these are mailed out everyweek, and the love to throw in starbursts and cram as much info in as possible. Try also the automobile section of any newspapers...some of those ads are bad.
Now for comparative good design, go to targets flyer, or some catalouge for like abercrombie. These have cleaner layouts usually.

i see bad and good design everywhere. The problem is how to articulate why you think it is a bad piece of design! But usually supermarket catalogues are pretty crappy (as suggested by Drorain). I find that money is generally a good attractor for good design, i.e. when you are paying for somthing like a car, the dealer will usually invest in a good designer.

CAR ADS... BAD!
perfect example of what not to do. D-Zine will tell you. Car dealers want no white space... cram everything in there. Makes the ads look busy and cheesy.

I HATE car ads, yet I am forced to do them daily...and TONS of them - QUICKLY! http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/DesktopModules/dotNetBB/emoticons/weep.gif LOL!
It's true, they want NO white space. Quite tragic actually. It hurts me to design for the auto dealers. I do have ONE salesperson who lets me embrace the white space! She keeps me sane! THANK GOODNESS FOR HER!
