Hi Jeff,

My best advice would be not to shortcut on your drawing class, go along to a real drawing class where you can study and learn from other people around you. Before i did my GD degree, i did what's called an art foundation course here in the UK. It's a 1 year course that unteaches you all the bad habits you've been taught before by making you do crazy things like drawing without looking at your paper, drawing with your other hand, drawing with your pencil on the end of a big stick, drawing blindfolded using touch only. I can't recommend enough how an intense 2 weeks of drawing really changed the way i look at things and stopped me from just seeing objects that i draw and paint. Sorry i'm not in the states so can't recommend anywhere.

Enjoy the forum and good luck with your course

I'm surprised your university doesn't offer drawing classes, have you looked?

I am reading an excellent book right now called 'Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain' which is quite good! There is a review here:drawsketch.about.com/od/suppliesbooks/fr/draw_right_side.htm (http://drawsketch.about.com/od/suppliesbooks/fr/draw_right_side.htm)

It is nothing better than Practice, Practice, Practice. It is always a good way to get good at something. Carry a sketch book around with you. One of my favorite drawing places my drawing class went to was a junkyard and a demolition building. Lots of interesting things to draw there.

Adding to what Morea said, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is used as the textbook for drawing courses at the local university where I live ... I have it on my bookshelf myself. I've also got a video workshop by the author that's quite good. You can purchase that, if you're interested, at the author's site http://www.drawright.com/
