Hi - I have what is likely a newbie question, but one I cannot seem to resolve. Any input is greatly appreciated!!!

I had a brochure professionally printed that included a gradient in the corner of the background.Where the text overlapped the gradient, the font printed bold! I am assuming this is design-error and not a printer-error and want to confirm. (Also, don't want to make the mistake again assuming this is the case.

Thanks very much!
Rebecca

Umm what program are you using and what font. It was most likely a problem on your end as the printer just outputs the files that WE the designers give them (that is my feeling anyways). What font were you using and what file type did you send to the printer?!

Maybe if we can get a lil more info, we can help a little more. :o)

WOw - thx for the speedy response!
Illustrator CS, sent the native file with outlines, Palatino Linotype font.

Thanks! (for the welcome, too.)

Humm...have you contacted your printer to ask about it?
Usually when something doesn't come out the way I expected it too, I call the prepress department I work with and talk to them about it. They research it on their end as I do on mine and then get back to me...and we figure out what the problem is and whose end its on, so that it doesn't happen again because that is the MAIN thing - to avoid reocurring issues.

To me..that's the best way to go about it, rather than placing any blame ever. Working together with the printer to find out what happend is your best bet, and they will respect you for it. :)

Ok - and thanks. I have been awaiting a call back from the printer, though first response was to cite design error without explanation. I'm open to the error being on either end. My priority is preventing it moving forward. I appreciate your thoughts.

If anyone has any thoughts on how font is impacted (bolded) by an underlying object/effect (gradient), I'd appreciate it! Is this a layer issue, etc.?

Thank you!

It's both a designer and a printer error.
A designer error for using text over a transparency feature and possibly not saving correctly for print and a printer error for not catching it.

Both of you need to go here:
studio.adobe.com/us/print/main.jsp?xhtml=ptd#col_and_trans (http://studio.adobe.com/us/print/main.jsp?xhtml=ptd#col_and_trans)
Scroll to the bottom and read all white papers concerning use of transparency in printing...
