Hey Everyone!

I'm trying to teach my self how to use QuarkXpress. Can anyone recommend any good books? I'm just a beginner never looked at quark express before.

Another question is it true if you know how to use quark you can use Indesgin or are they completely different?

And do companies prefer you to know Quark over Indesign as of right now?
So If I wanted to get a designing job this summer I would have a better chance knowing QuarkXpress over Indesign in other words?

Thanks

Well right now I think it depends on where you live, I am in wisconsin and in my dealings with jobs and printers Quark is still the domonent program.

That's not to say you can use indesign here but most of the companies are still in Quark mode.

If you know Quark you should be able to get along just fine in Indesign with a little practice.

As far as books go I am not really sure, I just tought myself the program by using it. It not really like photoshop or illustrator where you can do things a million different ways and get the same result, Quark is really straight forward layout. That is why I like it!

HI mar1300,
as far as books go, to be honest I am not sure which is the best book. The last quark book I purchased was in colloge and it was version 3! haha! I think mine was from Peachpit press tho, and it was good. Check out Amazon or even your local bookstore, they should have plenty of options for you to choose from! /DesktopModules/dotNetBB/emoticons/thumbsup.gif

Quark and InDesign are both layout programs. Some features are very similar but I have yet to really bring myself into InDesign bc I am so comfortable with Quark. I know - bad designer!! LOL! Hopefully someone who is fluent in both will be able to help you with this question as well. From what I can tell..the basics are the pretty much the same or close enough to figure it out. I haven't had too much trouble with what I have done in ID.

Hard to say on what design jobs really prefer. It really varies. Many many that I see are still asking for Quark and some are asking for both. I haven't seen many ads asking for only InDesign yet. Its good to know both and I think if you learn one, you can learn the other.

Good luck! /DesktopModules/dotNetBB/emoticons/thumbsup.gif

I used the visual quick-start guide... by peachpit press(I think)(D-Zine mentions it)

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0321205480/qid=1111157712/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/102-2584126-5178526

If you are computer savvy, I find it great... It basically goes through all the tools. I haven't opened one in a looong time, but if anything the quality should be better. These books aren't the best for all programs (easn't too crazy about the Flash one), but with Quark it helped. You will still need to learn technical stuff like CMYK vs. Pantone(Spot Colors), DPI vs. LPI...

45's are on their way back in...

I second the use of the visual quick-start series. They're uncluttered, well-structured and help you to quickly learn the program (IMHO).
