So ya'll know me and every designer here is looking for a job where I work. And you all know I'm very close to getting one, 2 more weeks to wait...

Anyway today was supposed to be this other girls last day, she is to go to a large format tradeshow design company. 40k a year...12 more than we get now. Today WAS supposed to be her last day. Now apparently the company might be closing down their boston office, so she may not have this new job.

And she's at risk of not having this one, she doesnt know yet, I know the managers would want to keep her on, she'll be awfully embarassed either way, buit she needs a job. So anyone have this experience, anyone know what to think about it...

heckno, she's just a friend I'm worried for, we're all on the same level...designers for people that need em from our print house. we all get the same $$ to

Okay. Firstly, if she's good at her job (which I assume she is, as she's been working there) and the position is still required, I see no reason why she should have to let go her current position in the company. The hardest thing for any company, is insuring that they employ people that can, and will, do the job that is required of them. It is a shame when good staff find a job more fitting to their needs elsewhere, but this is not a problem if it is approached with respect and curtiosy between all involved. If this is the case, she should explain the situation to your company's Managing Director, so as to try and come up with a comfortable plan for both her, and your company (this, would no doubt involve some gesture on your friend's behalf ... afterall, if your company can offer to delay her resignation, it is only fair that she do something in return - free overtime perhaps?).

Tricky one.

if she is in good with your curent managers. she should just tell them what is going on. there is no shame in that.

I don't see what she has to be embarrassed about - If the job falls through, that's not her fault - the other company shouldn't be hiring if their business is downsizing. And I wouldn't receive the impression that she would be crawling back to the current employer - rather the current employer should do anything possible to hold onto her for any amount of time. Even if you hire someone to replace her, keep her on indefinitely to train the replacement and make the transition smooth. She's probably made the company enough money to warrant some degree of lattitude. She doesn't need to do a damn thing in return - your employer is already getting the services of a 40K employee for a fraction of the cost - as an employer I'd milk that for all its worth.
Dont burn any bridges - that goes for employee and employer. As an employer you don't want to piss off a good employee that makes you a lot of money - even if it turns out you can't afford him or her. There might be an opportunity to bring them back, as in this case (although it did happen pretty fast). Carry on as normal until she knows for sure shes leaving or staying. If she stays, then you can have a going away party AND a welcome back party! If your my age, make sure space these at least several days apart.
