Oye! Maybe one of you kind folks can help me as I'm officialy 450$ in debt because my dad is a whiney little bitch.

Ok, I'm twenty years old and in college, I haven't lived with my dad since March of 2004 and i live on my own now with my fiance. So, because of this seperation I put that no one could claim me on my taxes. I was told that I'd get about 645$ back. *woot* Well, low and behold the crooked old fart that is my father trys to claim me. My taxes bounce back saying that someone previously used my SSN so I called him and he said that he did try to claim me but didn't get any money back.

So, I redid my taxes and now I owe the IRS 450$. I haven't sent them in yet though. Do any of you know a way I can fight this? My dad is an abusive drunk. I've tried over the years to forgive and forget, but this is just pushing me further away. A little help would be nice and you all are great. I was going to use that 645$ to pay for summer classes. Thanks!

Ooh...no advice here. Perhaps contacting the IRS and see if you can file a dispute? It seems like it'd be pretty easy to prove that you've been supporting yourself for the past year.

I had to pay about $250 in taxes this year. My dad said he wouldn't claim me as a dependent but he decided in the end that he would (he's not an abusive drunk. btw :) ). I also lost out on $2000 because I couldn't claim my tuition. $2,000 is A LOT of money when it's two months' salary. I was livid. I totally understand how angry and frustrated you are. I still do live at home and am itching to get out, unfortunately.

I want a refund. My life didn't come with an owner's manual.

Today I begin to understand what love must be, if it exists.... When we are parted, we each feel the lack of the other half of ourselves. We are incomplete like a book in two volumes of which the first has been lost. That is what I imagine love to be: incompleteness in absence.

Youare gonnalisten to me..and you are gonna LIKE IT!!!!!!

I have had some other ppl tell me this has happened to them to. Let us know if you find a way to fight it. Really seems like the IRS should do a better job of making sure the younger ppl don't get screwed. Especially with school debts and stuff. Good luck.

When I was in school my parents claimed me also because it helped them on their end, they got more back than I would so I let them claim me and they gave me the difference, they claimed me every year and did the same thing but that doesnt help you out.

Though you should not have to pay in just because you dad tried to claim you. If you were going to get 600 odd dollars back your dad claiming you shouldnt change it over 1000 dollars

Beat the $450 out of your dad's ass with a baseball bat.

Perhaps a phone call to the IRS would help? Maybe your dad could be nailed with fraud or something.

Hehehe, that was great Magnus... I talked to my fiance's mother who has done taxes for years and she help me redo them. I had a little problem in calculating how much I would get back or owe. According to her, instead of having to pay, I'll get back 325$, which is 300$ less than I would without him claiming me, but it's better than oweing money.

As it's not as bad as I thought, I don't know if I'll call him on it because he is the only one who can sign my FAFSA (goverment aid for school (which i don't even know if we'll qualify as he is making 30,000+ a year now and not giving many anything for school)) papers. Last year he refused until the deadline was but a short 3 days away, but we're on better terms at the moment.

I am still soo pancakeing pissed off right now. I'm still deciding on what to do. Thanks for all of your help and suggestions!

Limed,

Looks like you might have to, since he signed your FAFSA....
You should find a professional in the field, not H&R BlockŪ, something along the lines of Smith, Glaser and sons (a real firm of lawyers and accountants). Good Luck.

Thanks Magnus, I just wish that I had enough balls to say that to him.

And Red Raw, I have no idea... I didn't even notice until you said that and thanks for pointing that out. My laptop's not working at the moment so I can't get to the files to fix it, but when I do I will.

you know, i thought, that if you were a student you didn't have to do taxes yet. i went through college without ever doing taxes. i worked for a temp agency during summer break and was told that because i was still a full time student it wasn't necessary. especially if your parents claim you as a dependent.
