Remember Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Take a look at that show's logo:

I was in Barnes & Noble today and saw this:

Whoever designed the book cover didn't even attempt to change it even a little. They just slapped it on. And what makes it worse is the fact that it doesn't even fit in with the rest of book cover design (not that the design was even that great to begin with).

Except that appears to be an actual font.

Which came first? I have no idea.

I usually see fonts created from famous logos. I've seen a ESPN font, Harry Potter font, Disney font, etc. But those fonts usually come with a disclaimer saying that they cannot be used for commercial use.

Good point. And frankly, pairing it with Trajan is just tragic. The whole cover is just a hot tranny mess.

I just downloaded that font and in the .txt file, it says "non commercial use only".

Until someone said that the "B" was part of an actual font. I agreed with your reaction, but now that I know that, I don't mind it, I can see why the person thought it'd be appropriate for the cover, it seems to be an urban city streets type of book and that "B" has a rough/paintbrush quality to suit all that.

It is a font that is not for commercial use, so it is being used illegally in the book cover example.
Non-commercial use = not for any use that makes money.

Putting aside the legalities for a moment.
It's just lazy.
Lazy is often just another word for business putting short-term profits ahead of long-term ones. Quick bucks vs. slow bucks. More often than not, it's not the decision of the designer, either.
Isn't that what's at the bottom of so many of the world's 'big picture' problems?

I meant lazy from every aspect, business decisions to design. It's just not appropriate. Perhaps would have sold better with a bit of better design.

Exactly what are you expecting from a profession that doesn't require any qualifications?

Common sense and a sense of style perhaps lol.
And they call me a throwback.

What makes me sad is someone (who knows very little about design) must of got paid good money to do this.
