David E. Kelley, the creator of 'The Practice', 'Ally McBeal' and 'Boston Public', has decided to continue his TV 'Law' writing legacy with the new ABC hit 'Boston Legal.'

As a spinoff character from 'The Practice', James Spader has been brought into the spotlight as Alan Shore, a brutally honest but “ethically challenged” lawyer. Along with James Spader, the cast includes Mark Valley as Brad Chase, Rhona Mitra as Tara Wilson, Lake Bell as Salley Heep and most importantly the Emmy award winning William Shatner as Denny Crane. (And who better than William Shatner to play a self-centered, outspoken partner in the law firm Crane, Poole & Schmidt.) The chemistry between Shatner and Spader leads to some of the most outrageously bizarre antics on TV. David E Kelley loves to have these two characters be so off the wall that sometimes they leave the other characters with nothing more than a dropped jaw and a blank expression.

'Boston Legal' is not as nutty as 'Ally McBeal' but still much less dramatic than 'The Practice.' With an interesting balance 'Boston Legal' covers mostly civil and corporate cases but still has the occasional criminal case thrown in. The office politics and personal relationships are an interesting touch that still shies away from crossing the line into being too overly dramatic.

David E. Kelley has had an amazing ability to write some of the hottest topics in today's news into the story lines of 'Boston Legal.' He is even able to push that line into the grey area and he is not afraid to get his characters intermingled with some very controversial topics. Some of these hot topics have included the defense of a transvestite who was fired from being Santa Claus, a case involving a pharmaceutical company that is dealing with controversial tests that come out after a product becomes available, a Sudanese native who sues the U.S. government for lack of action in dealing with brutal ethnic crimes in his country, a student sues over censorship of TV news at a school by a principal and the most recent episode dealt with a death row inmate who was mentally handicapped. So as you can see some of the cases are ones that deal with some of the most controversial topics in today’s news.

'Boston Legal' has an amazing ability to be laugh out loud funny at one point and then intensely gripping at another. Some of the intense closing statements by Alan Shore and even Denny Crane leave you thinking hard about the cases they are involved in. The powerful writing that sucks you in during the closing statements is something that leaves you wanting more. “Boston Legal” manages to teeter on the side of insanity only to bring you back around with some amazingly profound writing.

It is still early to tell if 'Boston Legal' will manage to be another spectacular hit for David E. Kelley but from where I sit and watch, I crave every minute of it I can get!

This is definitely a must watch!

I love this show... unfortunately, it is going to be on hiatus for a few weeks, so I am experiencing a bit of withdrawal.

For the most part, this show has me rolling on the floor laughing so hard I can't breathe, but there have also been some very intense moments... as neuro described. The episode that involved the execution of the mentally retarded inmate - (who we were led to believe was coerced into a confession and was actually innocent) had me misty eyed before the end.

James Spader is an excellent actor. He plays Alan Shore so well that you feel like you know the character... and you excuse any of his 'morally questionable' actions because you like him and empathize with him so much.

I had no idea that this show was a spinoff from the Practice. Can't wait to get the first season on DVD!

Nice review Neuro. I have to admit I have never watched this show. Alley McBeal, a show I liked and then grew to absolutely loathe so turned me off to David E. Kelly and lawyer shows in general that I have never watched anything else by him. Perhaps I should give this one a chance. /DesktopModules/dotNetBB/emoticons/cool.gif

I hated Ally McBeal too, Kool. But this one is a winner in my book!

Weak Review dude!

Only because it was far too serious for me... you need to be reviewing the other things in life... The stickyness of Scotch Tape... How efficient toast is... The various uses for a magnet... those are the things that I feel need a good write-up... and Thimbles, they just don't get enough press these days!

Plus i've never seen this show as I'm in England and I also hate Lawyers!

I can't look at that James Spader guy without getting bombarded with mental images from Crash.
