I'm tired of being the receptionist/janitor/secretary/designer.
I'm looking at all of the amazing portfolios and design pieces posted here and I'm gloomy.
I've got four children and a full time job. My portfolio consists of a zillion haphazard pieces of paper crammed in a manilla folder and 50 cd's stuffed into a disorganized cd case. I can't seem to find the time it takes to put together a portfolio or a sharp resume.
BLAH - the truth of it is, I don't even know if I'm any good at what I do.....I'd give you pieces to critique, but I can't find the time to upload them.....will work on that, though.
I guess this would be the best place to ask if I should find another line of work, eh? I suppose you can check out the first and only website I've ever done, but the bosses keep changing it so it looks worse the longer it's up there www.winemastercellars.com
Sometimes I think I'd be better off tending bar in a miniskirt and halter top.......probably get a little more respect and a lot more money.
Negative, negative, negative........
Venting............thanks

I'll check out your website tonight - not a lot of time at work today. Hang in there, girl! It gets better.

Chin up, it'll be all right. At least you're not painting curbs yellow or milking cows. You'll find your place in this biz, and it'll be all the better when you think about today.

I ask myself if I belong in the business all the time. Some days I think I have no place in design, don't think ahead when starting a project, and wind up being educated on design elements I should know. Other days, usually working on things that allow creativity and imagination (remember them?), I feel empowered and know I'm doing what I should be doing. My wife always tells me not to let present circumstances dissuade you from doing something long term. If you can take a day or so to work on a portfolio, you'd be surprised how much you can get done. Or if you ask a fellow designer for help, some gracious soul may give you assistance with it.

I think four kids tops nine cats.
four kids would top nine dogs - and they need walks and all of that good stuff.
Hang in there, Theresa. You'll find the time somehow.
'Be still, young heart, and cease repining
Beyond the clouds is the sun still shining
Thy fate is the common fate of all
Some days must be dark and dreary.'

St. T -
I design sites for various clients here at my job and I must say that that website is actually well designed. Clean look, great color scheme, good design. Nice work!
If I may be so bold as to quote Tupac, keep yo head up!

Morea - what's the line I am missing there? I can't remember - is it 'in each life some leaves must fall?'
Learned this on in HS and that's the only line I can't recall.

Anyone raising 4 kids and trying to also do a full time job is an amazing person in my book. As far as the portfolio, just breathe...take one day at time...everything falls into place eventually, you will find the time. Hang in there!

St. Theresa - as everyone says - four kids - well done! I've got a cat and a dead houseplant and couldn't cope with more!
A word of advice - don't you ever feel your not good enough and don't you ever let anyone ptu you down. I let my employer do that to me for three years and finally i thought ferk this - I knew I was better than this, took two weeks holiday and was determined to find the job that I wanted to do and would fit me perfectly. And guess what I found it - four days later I was wecolmed into the new company and I handed in my notice.
And you know what my current employers are still doing - putting me down. and down and down again and then make feel guilty that it's your fault that they now can't cope with their workload. - I hope they go into liquidation. Because really as architects - their crap at what they do.. What goes around and comes around.
Beleive in yourself and what you do. Don't ever let anyone try and pull you down.
