My check today is $20.00 more than usual...this is a problem...We were do to get raises this week, and so I thought a retroactive raise to the 1st of the year...blus I didnt get my incentive check of 150 either...MEGA PISSED http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/DesktopModules/dotNetBB/emoticons/icon_evil.gif
SO I look at the checks, I'm like WTF
I bitch first...I get my review first...today...a half hour ago
I GOT A RAISE WITHOUT THE REVIEW PREVIOUSLY BEING DONE
In the review we're all nice nice...Drorain you do really well, your a ...looks at chart...Strong performer...oh wonderful...we're giving you a 5% increase...oh goody...(reviews are done once a year)
Drorain you write up invaluable job aids, you have the lowest revisions...you are willing to do any of the pilot's we toss out, and you speak up about processes...You know design, you know how to sell...We love you.
So we're giving you a 5% increase...
Lets do the math
(DICK)*.05=DICK PLUS .52 cents per hour
If I'm so Good...why is the kid that doesnt show up 3 days in a row...at least during two weeks per month get .71 cents...WHY AM I WHO NEVER has shafted you guys getting it in the ass like the damn greek I am?
WHY CANT YOU PAY MARKET VALUE?
At this point...I am nodding and smiling...but I'm out..gone...finis...Resumes will be flying out the door tonight.
I hinted to my boss..I work two jobs...I want to stop that
"Oh they are forming a bonus plan"
I DONT WANT NO pancakeING BONUS PLAN I WANT A BASE SALARY I CAN LIVE ON!

who is the person that thought of this number???
instead of giving what they deserve. lets give them...uhhhhhh... 3% increase..... that sounds like a lot!!! they will never know!!! he he heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee....

um... in all honesty, no raises here... my last print shop had not given raises in 8 years, and at the one before that we were lucky to see 25 cents an hour.
I feel your pain.

doing this in an area where the range is 32-40 and I'm making 28k...is especially frustrating

Drorain just consider it experience... and one day you will make more!! that is the way i look at it. :)

experience isnt paying the car, insurance, rent, student loans, bank loan, clothes, gas, and everything else...people with less experience are making more

Dro - I feel for ya! believe me! I've been with this company I am with for 5 years. I worked here for a year and left and came back. In the first year I worked here I got a $1/hr raise in less than 2 months...6 months later, another $1/hr.
I left and came back about 2 years later. Now everyone gets the same raise (yeah..those two quarters!!) at the same time every year. I do NOT think that is a fair way AT ALL to do raises, but at the same time I talk to so many people who either don't get one or have to ask for one that I feel at times I should be fortunate.
but still..I would be pissed too!
'No more yanky my wanky! The donga need food!!' - heh
I sort of long for the days when I had a steady paycheck and raises.
I had a crap year this year because some pretty sleazy people crossed my path who stiffed me on quite a hefty sum of money. (After seeking legal advice, I decided to move forward and not get an ulcer over it. Unfortunately one of these clients moved on to the next victim/designer after I stopped the job due to non-payment and wound up stiffing this poor girl on 300 hours of work. And from what I heard through the grapevine, a rather large print bill, too.)
So. Just think, at least you don't have to deal with bad business people who make poor decisions which YOU wind up paying for, and would rather move town or fight you in court than pay you. An employer has to pay you. Sounds pretty rosy to me sometimes. lol
I've had people file bancrupcy, decide not to follow through with their grand business ideas and close up shop after I did all kinds of work for them (this is why I don't like to work with start-ups anymore) and all kinds of bad stuff. Even with good contracts, you wind up being the victim of stupid people sometimes ... that can actually sleep well at night knowing you've invested a tremendous amount of time on their behalf for absolutely NOTHING. 'But ... oh well, I changed my mind so I shouldn't have to pay that bill.' Only fair to them I guess.

That's all very depressing but the point is, things do get better. As The Donald says, 'You can never quit, never give up.' Hang in there. I know I am ... even though when you work for yourself you take risks ... the rewards are *potentially* much higher. I am determined to recover from last year ten-fold. (Well, not ten-fold but ... you know. Do much much better.)
Just keep plugging away toward your goals. Trust me, it gets easier and better.

Dro?
Man, I'm sorry to tell you this but 5% is it. And they base it on your rate. Is the schmuck who doesn't show up being paid at a higher rate to begin with? Employers just don't feel the need to 'reward' their good employees anymore. They figure they can just go out and hire another one if you quit.
Granted, in Taxachusetts you can't live on $28k but it's really tough to break into the 32k mark in Design even in Boston - especially your first year out.
Hang in there though. You'll get thru the 'dues' part.

Oh, I hear ya man. My old employer pulled that bullcrap all the time. As far as I know, they're still doing it.
Send out them resumes and get yourself a good payin' job where they stand by their word!
