Ok, so I know its not necessary to have the most up-to-date software to do a good job (photohop CS 2 releases in May http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/DesktopModules/dotNetBB/emoticons/biggrin.gif ), but this kinda just jumped out at me.

I can purchase the new CS for $600+. (as if. If I had that, I'd just buy the whole suite).
I can puchase a new copy of PS7 for $125. (ok, that's better).
You can also purchase the CS upgrade for $170. (hmmm...).

Now if I have photoshop 7, can't I go ahead and puchase the CS upgrade to get CS?

If you're not following me, you can either buy CS for $600 OR purchase PS7 and the CS upgrade for just under $300. Is that right?!

These are all prices straight from Amazon, so its not like I'm buying OEM software here.

Oh, look, I can buy the CS2 upgrade for even cheaper! ($145)

Also, CS is getting mixed reviews, but everyone who's bashing it seemed to be all in the same boat (I don't have Windows XP). I have Windows XP Pro(cause Home editions are a false security - Service Pack 2 makes a huge difference), so I'm not betting on being disappointed. Most people seem happy with 7 and others estatic with CS.

I did something similar: I found a legit, unregistered Photoshop 4 on Ebay and bought it for somewhere around $70-90, then I bought the ENTIRE CS Suite upgrade for $550. Much better than the $1000 price for the full priced suite.

When you purchase an older version of a program to get a cheaper upgrade path, just absolutely make sure that it's either unregistered, or that the buyer can transfer the rights to you. I actually had to go through two Photoshop purchases.....the first one the owner of the CD didn't know who it was registered under (eh?) so he refunded me the money. The second auctioneer guaranteed that it was completely unregistered, and sure enough, it was.

Oh, now see, I didn't know that you could upgrade to the whole suite if you only had photoshop alone. That's a good point too then.

Oh, one more thing to add if you try my advice, too many sellers on Ebay are selling academic versions (I wish they'd ban that). Highly annoying, you're going to have to do a bit of hunting until you find a commercial version. (Note: the commercial version will often be sold for a higher price than the academic)
