Basically I need to know how they generally work and what are the general instructions.

I have a whole bunch of things to send to a new contact and they are small enough sizes to send over the net. He gave me an FTP address but I have no idea how to use them,

all help much appreciated.

Go to http://www.emftp.com/ and download it.

It is free and easy to use.

OR

go to

http://www.net2ftp.com/

which lets you ftp online.

I know what an FTP is and I know how to get to their ftp site, but I don't know how to 'upload' to the site or anything.

I'm on a mac and emftp is for windows, thanks anyway.

I don't use a mac, but isn't there something called Fetch software that's popular that is used?

If you can login (dialog pops up when you hit it) you should be able to drag and drop files in the ftp site via your web browser. I do it all the time on both mac and windows (open FTP site, find files, copy/paste or drag-n-drop.

If I were you I would get a program called Cyberduck, its free and its for osx I use it all the time. download it and give it a try. if you have problems IM on MSN, Yahoo, or AIM and I will walk you thru it. it is the best program I have found!

I use Cyberduck (OSX mac) or Fetch (OS9 mac) to download or upload files via ftp (file transport protocol) all the time. They basically open a door to the ftp site you are using. You find the file you want and download —or— you find the file on your own system, and direct it to the location you want to upload. You can also ftp files via your Web design software like Dreamweaver or GoLive.

fetch for mac
currently coreftp lite on pc. <- free and okay, no problems so far.

as long as you have your site address, username and password, you're good. you connect, upload/download/create folders...whatever like normal.

I've used both, programs and the browser... I've found that the browser is still the easiest way to do it!!

http://www.rbrowser.com/RBrowserLite/RBrowserLite.html

This is free for mac, use it at home and at work, not buggy at all, download and upload a few gigs everyday with no problems.

Cheers Envision 1 and Everyone else...

RBrowser rules! I needed instant, free, software urgently and it works a treat, simple to use too... It certainly saved me £40 this morning in Postage costs.

Pat yer'selves on your backs, well done.... (clap clap)
