Memory problem?
I had been working on a large Illustrator file and when finished, placed the image in Quark. All was fine. Sent to rip for proofing. Needed to make changes (the next day) and when I opened the Quark file, I got the gray mesh box where the Illy file is suppose to be with a little white box that said "Translation Error".
Does anyone know if this is a memory error problem? Or what could have possibly happened?
How can I fix this?
Mac OSX 10.3.9
Ill CS
Quark 6.5

Well if quark has no info on it then it must not be a problem!

I had this happen recently. when i called them(only a ten hour wait), they said that venus is aligned with the moon and this will occur from time to time in the next six years...
Just kidding. I reopened the original files and copy and pasted all the elements into a new document for both quark and Illy. One thing that we do have in common is the update. I just updated to the 10.3.9. Also my Mac at work is on 10.3.8 because the Associated Press®, who I work with a little bit now told us not to update to 10.3.9 as problems with the Java Machine spits a few errors.
And that's my 2¢, back to you Barbara.

There is a possbility that the image has a cross platform preview. When you save as a .eps or, I believe, .tiff there is an option as to what save the 'preview' as, and whether to make it IBM or PC.
The IMAGE is cross platform, the PREVIEW is not
At least in older Quark, (4.1) an image with a Mac preview placed into a .qdx document on a PC will show a grey dot pattern. The Image is there, if you print, it will show up, ut the PREVIEW cannot be displayed on screen. Similar incidences going the other direction, putting PC formatted images into Mac Quark.
Open the image, and 'save as' a dupe image with the appropriate preview, and see if that changes anything.
Could also be a Postscript 2/Postscript 3 conflict.
