I keep reading that icc profiles are the best thing since sliced bread and that without them you can't get accurate colour reproduction.

So, why would the company that prints our magazine (which is one of the largest printing companies in the UK) ask for everything to be supplied without embedded icc profiles?

Because they have there own that they embed when they send it to there rips. If yours is embedded then they have to convert and that will have a larger color shift then if you have none embedded

in the 10+ years i have been working in this industry only one printer request an IcC profile from me.

So how do I know that the colours will be reproduced correctly?

Always ask for a color proof... and if it is really important go on a press check...

they should supply you with the profile. that's what this one printer did for me.

Yes indeed. That is why again I say I don't care for calibration. Color proofs are welcomed with a smile.

I get a colour proof, and I would ask for the profile they use, but unfortunately I'm not allowed to speak to them. For some reason my boss thinks it's unprofessional for the design department (me) to speak to the printer.

That is really gay!

I know!

Basically, this wasnt a problem until we sent a page with an image on it that had a white background. The file was as supplied to us, and had an embedded profile. When the proof came back the background had a yellow tint to it.

Now I get shouted at because it wasn't like that when I printed it in the office, but I'm still not allowed to talk to the printer to get it right.

LOL @ Mikey. But your words explain it perfectly that is gay!

Sometimes the printer won't send you the ICC profile... Some of those can cost $2000+. Some are custom. And some work in proprietary color management systems. No real reason you, the designer, should be embedding them unless you have a long-standing, hot and heavy relationship with a print vendor and they ask you to do it.

The only reason there were any embedded profiles is because my boss doesn't like me to tamper with any images that come in. She's always paranoid about being sued.

Your boss seems to have no confidence in your abilities at all!?! Tell her if she's not going to let you do your job propperly, not to come moaning to you when it all goes **** up! Be assertive, and if that doesn't work... Bitch Slap her, she'll love it! :P

You've hit the nail on the head. She believes everyone else over me, and yesterday actually said "don't pretend you know what you're talking about!"

Wha..wha.whhhat? The printer should literally be the designer's best friend! Otherwise fustration on the printer's part ensues.

Hey, Patrick!
Wouldn't this guy's boss be horrified at print vendor 'tampering' done to get colors, images and bleeds into files when designers aren't allowed to call for specs...

It's fine if the printer does it because they "know what they are doing"

I'm gonna be looking for a new job very very soon!
