Does anyone know the software used to create these types of icons?

Thanks!

Probably just Illustrator, Photoshop, and a little bit of the programmer's/artist's style.

All in all, of the icons I have seen from Longhorn. It's just the same ol' Microshaft gunk. Nothing spectacular, but just enough to make the duped purchaser of the OS think the polished turd they paid for is better than it was.

I won't buy into it. I never have.

Sorry, I had to go off... no offense :)

I don't know about Longhorn (that isn't out yet is it?), but a few weeks ago I found this article (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnwxp/html/winxpicons.asp) about XP icons.

Near the bottom of the article it states that they use this 40.00 program (http://www.gamani.com/gmgbuy.htm) to create the icons that they've designed in a vector app.

yeah longhorn isnt even out yet, if this is about piracy, then we don't need that here...

It wouldn't be piracy. There are developer downloads on the MSDN.

Does anyone else think that the Windows' GUI just gets worse and worse? I am quite conent with the classic 95 look myself, as it makes good use of every space on my screen which all these new plastic skins seem to invade like a backdraft.

Oddly enough, many Dell-type users seem to love the new plastic Windows look. As for icons ... I have a completely empty desktop ... I rely solely on my icons spanned across the top of my desktop - it is super-quick, and not too disimilar to OSX, except I have ALL my applications accessible at one-click.

I have XP skinned with Aston Shell. I only have 7 icons (3 files, 3 drives, and recycle bin). Then I have a dropdown menu at the top.

Longhorn is not scheduled to come out until 2006 or 2007 and will in essence be just about exact to the original beta version of the original OSX. Which is to say, none of your Windoze Applications are going to work anymore as the kernal code of the operating system will become a derivitive of UNIX.

Which, again, Microsuck will still be about 10 years behind Apple in the Operating System and stability game.

Good luck those of you who decide to invest in it. Something tells me, you won't have a choice if you plan on continuing working on a PC. Microshaft will not allow you to keep using an older OS. And all programming of assets (programs) for older platforms will will cease. It's either move forward or die. So, if you really want to move forward, go leap years ahead and abandon Windoze before it abandons you.

Just my .02

No offense.

Because what I just wrote is the buzz going on around the Microsoft Campus in Redmond. I know, I live here, and I hang at the coffee shops with a lot of Micrsuck Programmers who all use Macs to do their jobs.

as a user of both pc and mac, i'm looking forward to longhorn as much as i was to tiger. and even though microsoft is borrowing heavily from apple on the gui this time around, i'm looking forward to it. i'm not fond of the simple grey look of windows 95 & 98 and really didn't care about the plastic luna style of xp.

longhorn's gui, i think called avalon, is taking windows into the 3d dimension along with shadows and transparency which should be nice (if you have a computer that can run it).

LimedDesign ... I am so, so disappointed in you. Not fond of the ol' grey blocks? A fan of 'badly-executed' plastic skins? No! No! No! We'll soon have you singing a different tune .. or we'll make y' walk de plank, arrr.

Seriously, I also don't think the grey blocks are attractive, but the fact is ... the more details you add to and around an application's actual functions and features, the more crowded a screen will get (that's just the physics of visual details occupying pixel space). That being said, OSX does look lovely, albeit more cluttered than XP's default appearance.

That is true. At one time I went completely minimalistic and had a completely white desktop, with no icons and my start bar would minimize to off the screen.

also, there was once when i went 'old school' and used the windows 95/98/2000 look. i got over it quick though when i saw the finder in panther...

...oh sweet sweet finder, how i love to sing thy praises...

but, now i'm a junky for eye candy... *licks lips and drools a tad*

I liked the interface of DOS.

c:\

What could be simpler than that?

The problem with DOS though, was that you were always stuck with 640 x 480. Perhaps it has moved on since, but I am quite happy to see the back of it. Notepad however ... let us gather 'round, and sing a song for notepad.
