I'm not sure if this qualifies as a "Killer Technique" but it works. If you ever get: "Can't open the Illustration. The file was generated by a newer version of Illustrator". You can import it into Quark, then save it as an eps. Then you will be able to open it in Illustrator and after deleting all the extra crap that quark generates save it as your version of Illustrator.

Thank you Kool! That is a Killer Techinque. You wouldn't beleive how many times things like this come by and I suffer the burden of they greatful one.

I just found out (I think it was from here) that you can open a PDF with Illustrator and edit everything.

I know you press guys have a book of tricks that designer don't know about. One day I will find that book and share it with all my fellow designers, ...one day.

Sorry Benjo, That book is designed to self distruct unless certain percentages of cigarette smoke, BO, and ink residue are detected on you skin.

Benjo I just found out that PDF trick too, as far as I'm concerned its the cats meow!
If your ever stuck trying to open your old resume that you did up in Wordperfect (that won't open in word) open up your trusty copy of Corel Draw, it opens up wordperfect files!

Match in the gas tank, boom boom.

Haven't tried it with CS files, but if you rename AI 10 files to PDFs, they open in Acrobat, where you can SaveAs an EPS. In fact, you can control the level of the EPS and such with this route.

So AI files are, in effect, now PDF files.

Gotta be careful about the claim that AI can open any PDF flawlessly and 'keep' everything that was there. It just ain't so. There are prepress things that can fall through the cracks. And it also depends on the PDF's specs. Subsetted fonts for instance.

FTR, I've used CDraw 12's PDF import/open on PDFs that AI can't handle.
