Im needing to know how to set up color bars other than the color bars that Quark or InDesign use.
Im needing color bars that run completely across the sheet of paper on the press.
Can anybody help? Or know of a program to buy that would do this for me?

This is usually someting that the prepress dept. at the printer will take care of depending on the press and the direction it is running. Why do you need to supply them?

Well im sure the prepress guys will chime in with the precise answer, but ill give it a whirl.

What "Ripping" software/process are you using first of all, and what kind of printer are you printing too, is it 4 color? Press, plate, digital..etc.

we used to use software that wouold setup the pagenation and color bars automatically and then run straight to plate. i forgot the name of it though. but, for manual color bars, we created a color bar in illustrator and just placed in our document.

yeah, the pressmen use it to gauge the amount of ink on the paper to make sure they get even coverage.

I looked at that website, and the only thing I found was a definition as to what color bars are.

this link might help explain it a bit: http://www.printcbf.com/dev/html/commercial_printing_2.htm

although, when we placed the color bar manually, we just used yellow, magenta, cyan and then black solid, no changes in opacity. so it looked just like the color bar in that diagram but solid.

Hey, 3howards - that is a Good site I think I can copy that. Why didn't you use the opacity changes?
Wouldn't that be a good way to see if you pressures are set right?

to be honest with you, i don't know. we had seasoned pressmen so that's all they needed. i never questioned it because they always did a good job making sure that things lined up properly. if they knew i had a picky client, they would show me each plate run. i don't work there anymore, but i send all my print jobs to them. as a matter of fact, i just ordered business cards today.

Nice to know that you trusted your printers. I think that is a good quality that designers and press operators should have.
When ever I get the time to make my color bars I'll post them for everyone to see.

Preps is an excellant program that allows you to lay in color bar, crop marks and a lot of other things. We used it on our 40' and 20' Heidleberg presses. In combination with Rampage RIP we ran into very few problems. Expensive but worth it! Of course I didn't have to pay for it?!
