Whats your process for creating your PDFs? Do you have Quark set up to create postscript file for later distilling or are you just exporting as PDF or doing it some other way?

^^ You're in good hands here, Express. D-Zine's fought the Quark to PDF battle many times, and won, earning her a large collection of postscript error decapitated heads on her wall in the office.

It could be a blank .ps file or try resaving the images... If all else fails, play solitaire. There's my two cents.

I'm getting the same problem. It seems like every week I face a battle getting the bulletin out. But I know what my problem is. It's called can't afford the new stuff. Sure I've got Panther, but that was only $129. A copy of the newest version of Quark and Distiller, now that's another story.
So, I'm still running Quark 4.11 and Distiller 3.0 and boy do they complain at me every time I asked them to do their job. "We should be retired by now!" they say. Yeah, well so should I, and you don't see me complaining.
No, but really, any advice D-Zine?

Quark 4.11 was the last solid Quark made. 5 and 6 are flaky at times. They haven't updated the program except to add in a few things you can get Xtensions for, moved a few menus around, and added web publishing that no one uses anyway. And you're right, you would need to upgrade Distiller because Quark still makes sucky pdfs.
The programs worked fine at one time. They should still work fine. Unless running them in Classic rather than 9 is somehow causing the problem. Can you dual boot or did you just plop Panther on as an upgrade over 9?

PDs right about 4.11 being solid. I loved 4.11. I'm on 6 now and I have no complaints so far really. I also have Distiller 6 but don't use it...I use v4.0. Distiller 6 gave me hassles with creating PDFs so I had the PDF guru from the press come down and work with me when I couldn't get it working, and he couldn't solve it either. I feel Distiller 4 is more solid than 6 so I run it through classic...no issues here and I creat ALOT of PDF.
I haven't had to run 4.11 through classic so I can't help much there. I know upgrading Quark seems like a pain but in the long run it may not be such a bad idea. Eventually it will have to be done anyways and the longer you wait - the more expensive it will be.
The smallest thing can ruin the creation of your PDF. Usuing the styles for fonts in the measurements pallete - that one will deifnately cause you problems 95% of the time so stay away from that if you are doing that. I have no idea what most of the errors from Distiller mean and solving them is all trial and error usually. I have seen some wierd stuff.
When you create your PDFs, do you do the entire document at one time, or page by page? I highly recommend one page at a time. Think it will take longer? Nah..not really. I do 64 every wednesday like that. Why? Becuase when you drop the entire document in Distiller, and you receive an error...what page is that error on? You will have no idea and it makes solving the problem feel even more impossible. Doing in page by page, you are able to narrow down where your problem is. It could be as simple as a memory issue.
So, how do you create your PDFs claid?
