where does everyone get their royalty free stuff? and, someone told me(i dont believe it) that once a song is xx years old, it loses its rights...is there any truth behind this? i really have no knowledge on this subject. i have seen sites that use clips of popular tunes, what are some of the rules to follow?

Well the rights come up for auction after a certain number of yrs, yes. That's how Michael Jackson ended up owning the Beatles rights. While McCartney and Yoko Ono bickered over the price to offer, he snuck in and swiped em. But for you to use something royalty and permission free, it needs to be in public domain, which usually only happens when the composer and their families are all dead and there's no known descendants.
