Sorry I posted this in 'techniques' but it should probably be here instead as it's mainly a question:
In Illustrator CS it's easy to make a photo fade into a colour: make a rectangle with a black to white gradient, put it in front of the photo and use the transparency panel: do 'make opacity mask' (or is it transparency mask?). Then you get a photo that fades to transparent, so if you put a colour behind it the photo blends into the colour. Like this:

What I want to know is how do I do this in InDesign? I've tried the help files and can't work it out. Tried messing around with the blending modes too.
