Hi, just used PHotoShop CS for the first time to save a PhotoShop file as a jpg. I did so, but it would not open the jpg after. I actually had to manually type in the extension: .jpg, is this normal now? It's inconvenient, do I just need to click something?

Not sure how you went about doing this, but I just opened a new document then "save as" and it kept the .jpg extension just fine.
If your on a mac there is a an option in the save as screen you have to check to append the extension.

I'm on a PC. What it is is that I have a file I created in PhotoShop, when I go "save as" the drop down box will let me choose jpg, but it does not actually alter the file extension in the box above it!! That remains with a PhotoShop extension. I have to type it in manually to change it. After I do that, it will open fine. Illy CS works fine.

Does the PC version have the "append file extension" checkbox too? Seems silly but you might want to look for it on the Save pane.

Nope, doesn't have it, but I bet there's an equivalent somewhere on this thing....I'll keep looking.

It's a long shot ... but does any other program on your system save as .jpg? It may be possible, that your system's jpg encoding is corrupt. Otherwise, consider re-associating jpg in the File-Type options of your OS.

I found it. I can't even recall what it was called, but it seemed to be a totally unrelated option with a term I'd never heard of before in preferences. Why on this earth would that not be turned on by default??
Anyway, the jpg worked fine as long as I manually typed in the extension, so the jpg formatting was not in question, just the file naming, which would not convert by default.
You'd think software that cost this much would come with manuals, or support, but it doesn't.
The solution was also nowhere in the help file that I found.
