The search didn't bring up my answer, kind of surprised this hasn't been discussed.

Anywho, I recently had a design produced into vinyl car decals and I'm selling them to people who would have something to do with what the graphic is about. However, I'm somewhat concerned that some random person in the bunch might get a little jealous and will try to swipe my design and have their own decals made cheaper. No one has said anything to this effect, but I want to be covered. I have a jpg from Illy up on my website for a little bit of clarity along with the pictures of the real decals.

One of my teachers has said that in the old days you could mail a printout of the design to yourself in a sealed envelope. The postdate proves that you had access to that file in some legitimate way no later than that date. Is this still ok? I know it's like $30 to copywright up to 10 designs, but I've got 3 designs at the moment. Can I do the mail trick to hold me over until I have the other 7?

I'm feeling like a b*tch because the whole thing is in reference to a nonprofit advocacy "movement" of sorts (I'm being vague on purpose, you can PM me if you want full details). I'd love to give my stickers and designs away for free but there's no way I can swing it financially.

There's copywrighting, and then there's ghetto copywright.

You can print it out and mail it to yourself in a registered letter. It's sort of legit, but weak.

It's a good idea to do it only until you have ten designs. Then get them done fo' real.

And you're not a b*tch. Regardless of who you do it for. You spend time and effort on those designs. If they were for the Pope, no, Mother Theresa, you should still portect your hard work from getting ripped.

check your spelling, if you do a search for copyright rather than copywright you may find some threads that are relevant. ;)

don't feel like a b*tch, it's your work and you don't want other ppl ripping it off and taking credit for it! not sure if this is relevant outside the UK http://www.acid.uk.com/ but it might be helpful?

Well, now I'm embarassed :) You were right, there were tons of threads. shellebelle's gotta go back to grammar school...

One of my teachers has a very effective pricing strategy and I just priced out one design and was spot on (I didn't use his method when pricing these things). The other one was over by like $.39, but that could be counted as shipping overhead. So I'm not overcharging for these things, which makes me feel better.

I should probably go to bed, I have to be up in 5 hours :)
