Alright, kinda dropped the ball on this last month. So SInce it's the beginning of June let's start now. Post your Self Portraits entries (1 entry per person) here. Cut off date for submitting photos will be Sunday June 26, so we have a week to vote.
Happy Shooting :D

we can vote the last week of June and the 1st week of July, if you like.
I would recommend photo size of 640 x 480 pixels, portrait or landscape orientation acceptable.
You can host photos for free at www.imageshack.us if you like.

Are there any kind of guidelines or limitations? Sometimes adding limitations helps to grow and problem solve a little.

I think a no-holds barred approach is the way to go here. Like penguins in the desert, let your creativity run wild.

This is a really good idea! I'm gonna have a good go at this one. What do we win or is it just a warm satisfied glow?

What about altering it or making adjustments in PS? Or just straight photo? I can't remember if we worked this one out or not...

Morea ... just how many awards have you and Kink won already on this here forum? Could either of you really get any more respect and admiration from us all, than you already have!? [wink]

Just my two cents but my vote is for no PS adjustments. Any thoughts on this?

well, I would dare to say that most people wouldn't mind a little a little more love and respect! :p
Then again, I would even go so far as to say that the amount of love and respect everyone has for each other here on the gool ol' GDF is certainly a factor in this forum's popularity!
Ok, everybody... big group hug! http://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies/love/1/love28.gif

Group hug portrait of all GDF memebers would be good. That'd be a mighty challenge though, being that we're scatteredall over the place ... literally on floors, beaches, desks, park benches, and strangers' doorsteps, all around the world right now.

Well, I vote for using PS, if we're having the debate. I think we'll come up with lots of vastly different ideas.
Although that would mean there isn't as much photography skill involved? And that seems to be the purpose of the forum.

That was my thinking as well. Then I read what I had posted yesterday about this being no-holds barred. I guess I'm conflicted. Anyone care to chime in on this?

I'm leaning towards no. Since it's a photo contest we should probably make it just photo. Someone could take a really crappy photo and really fix it up, and then what's the point of having a "photography" contest. It'll turn into who's the best at PS....
Neballer
06-07-2005, 03:19 PM
I'd say no, but where do you draw the line from touching up a photo in PS to "altering" a photo in PS? so I guess I'd change my answer to why not, since PS plays a big role in digital photography.

How about only adjustments that could be made in a Darkroom? Tone, levels etc... Then there's the whole multi exposure thing...!?!
Ulysses
06-07-2005, 03:37 PM
I think no too. If this is a photography competition, then let us be retro, and submit photos as they were taken by the camera. Obviously, if you're developing your own film, no developing trickery ... no overlays and exposure or developing tampering.

How about:
"Editing software may be used for usual processing (cropping, tonal and color adjustments, resizing), but no outside elements, objects, or images can be pasted, drawn or added into the original image. No elements, objects, or images can be cloned, cut out, or taken out of the original image other than what occurs from cropping."

Perhaps, this contest should now simply be to outline a series of clear and agreeable conditions on how to take a supossed portrait photograph!?

Those who shoot in RAW format need to perform digital processing. That's the point of shooting in RAW format. On many digital cameras, users can adjust saturation, contrast, sharpness, and color tone, so as they come out of the camera will be different for everyone.

I hate my digital camera, and if it wasn't for Photoshop all the pics i took with it would be crap! I can't wait to go back to film.. :p

I've already done two of those because I belong to photoworkshop.com, and it has been an assignment twice.
My Coolpix 995 may be an ancient one, but it's swivel lens sure does help with these.

what about blowing out an image? or any other kind of effect that would normally be performed in a darkroom?
* my avatar is a good example of a blown out image....

Here's mine. Since I'm a new dad, I can't help but see everything as an opportunity to show off the cuteness that is my son. The only PS'ing I did was to crop and gradient map this into grayscale.

Blowout is fine. I think that would fall under tonal or color adjustments.

I really like the fact that everybody's photo has different perspective, although that's what I should have expected from a bunch of creatives ;)
Since these are our "self portraits" they each say something about us. This is a really neat project.
As an "advanced beginner" in terms of photography I am sure that these "contests" will also help me to hone my photo skills, and really make me think outside the box.

Thanks, that's kind of what I was going for... my theme was sadness/depression, and I took 5 self portraits and 5 pictures of dilapidated buildings/parts of town. It was pretty fun actually. I wandered around down town (what little downtown Lafayette has) and in alleys and stuff. :p
