hey i just joined here after lurking through the forums for a few nights. this seems to be a great site with a lot of good information. Anyways im a 21 yr old who just dropped out of college because, well, i hated it and i wasn't really sure what the hell i was doing there. i've been drawing since i was 10 and have always wanted to make a living as an artist. when i was 15 i started learning Photoshop, Illustrator, after effects, dreamweaver, Bryce, poser, just everything i could get my hands on. i've been really interested in graphic design ever since then but was persuaded to "just get a degree" so i shelved it for a long time. now im finding myself really wanting to pursue a career in it, even though i know its hard and frustrating. it is however the only thing i can really see myself being happy doing. that being said i was wondering if you guys could maybe give me some ideas on how to build my portfolio. I just got a job at kinkos figuring it would prob help me with networking and working with print materials. but im having a really hard time finding work. i don't want to undercut more experienced and talented designers just to get work, i'd rather be recognized as talented and be paid what im worth. im currently building a website but im lacking content because my portfolio is mostly limited to traditional art and personal projects. so i guess i'm hoping that someone could tell me A) if i have the skills or talent to actually make a living doing this and B) What kind of projects or mock projects i could put in my portfolio to really sell myself as a designer
sorry for the long first post but i do appreciate any input you guys could give me, thanks.
heres a few samples of what ive done recently:

Hypothetically speaking...may I ask how you would intend to print your business cards? (assume that it isn't fake and you've been given the nod to print em)
*edit* It would be unethical for me to pass comment on the rest of your work simply because It involves certain subjective opinions about what I am drawn to in the arts world

uhh, i don't know actually. i'd prob have to take them somewhere and have it done since all i've got is a cheap printer at home and it would look like crap. either that or i'd have to invest some money into a nice printer. and as far as your other comment goes I understand where your comming from, but the way I see it all art is subjective and i certianly don't expect anyone to like my stuff. i know it comes off as angsty, weird, and prob a tad immature. what im interested in knowing is are my techniques any good, like what do i need to work on? what skills do i really need build up, or hell tell me what just plain sucks. I'm just trying to find some direction so any feedback would be greatly appriciated. but thanks for your comment, i hadn't really given printing too much thought and it's clear to me now that it's somthing i shouldn't overlook.

You would need a lot of money :D That shade of green along with the blue cannot be produced on a conventional printer they fall out of the CMYK gamut...at best you would need to separate those colours as spot colours and run the job on a printing press.
I think of great importance is that you do a bit of googling for literature on pre-press work, printing, and colour.
oh and....welcome to the forum

welcome to the forum
don't take this the wrong way
you have alot to learn. I would get out of that Kinko's setting and go into a traditional printshop cause you really need to learn about preprss and actually printing.
it will open your eyes
good luck

yeah i tried to get a job in a real printshop but that was almost as hard as trying to get a job as a graphic designer. there just aren't that many in my area and the ones that are looking for people are looking for managers, not entry level people. i figure kinkos will be interesting, good for contacts if nothing else. in the meantime i guess i'll pick up some books and see what i can learn about printing since i know well....nothing about it. i can do more in photoshop than just airbrush and blending, but i lack the experience doing any kind of proffesional design. I think at this point it prob wouldn't be a bad idea to get an assoiciates and take some classes since that would prob give me some direction.
i guess i've got a long road ahead of me but hey i appriciate the advice. and no worries about me offended or anything, I learned a long time ago that you have to have a thick skin if you want to do anything art related.
oh and btw, your comic book is awesome, the style reminds me a little of Fathom and The punisher. very cool man
