There are some weird names that GDF members have, so tell everyone how you chose it.

Here's my story:

Once upon a time i was kneeboarding (like wakeboarding but on your knees) and my mate said i look like a caterpillar when i get up from a prone position. We then decided we should legally change my name to caterpillar joe so that when i graduated highschool the principal would have to read out my new legal stupid name. I have no idea where the joe part came from but for my GDF name i shortened it to cjoe.
I was going to originally be 'grinderfly' after an interesting piece of clipart art i did in one of my IT classes. It looked really cool but i cant find the GIF.

Keyare
06-16-2005, 06:39 AM
That's cool, caterpillar joe.

Mine's pronounced "Kay are ee" and if you do a Google search, it's the only one on the planet. Just like my real name, I'm the only one on the planet.

Like a tweed fish in a blue sea.

Since I am a R/H (Ron and Hermione) shipper, I basically believe in the epilouge of the HP series they'll end up together. Undeniably. I was initially going to make my username rhrshipper but I relized that ship has sailed.

RON+HERMIONE=FOREVER

Note: They are fictitious characters from they Harry Potter books. I am weird, I know...

my GDF name is the Quenya translation of my actual name.

Quenya is the language of the elves in Lord of the Rings. It is learnable, like any "real" language. I can actually communicate with other people who know Quenya, even if they speak no English and I speak none of their native language.

Regardless, my name means "dark one". The translation is morea, pronounced "MORE-ay-uh".

There is a place in LOTR called moria (more-ee-uh), which is similar, but means (roughly)"dark place".

Stop laughing. It's not like I went out and learned Klingon. :p

Well, I was destracted when I set up my user name, and I typed my real name in the user name field and my user name in the real name field. I was destined to be BlueMonkey, which is what I'd call my freelance business if it ever happened, but I am known by my real name, Jason Fraker. Ugh, sometimes I'm such a moron!

Drawing a Blank
06-16-2005, 01:34 PM
I used to use my real name (greglearn (all one word)), but decided to change it so people can't google my name and get a lot of posts about my rantings on client stupidity. Anyway I was trying to think of a name and I just wasn't coming up with anything. I noodled it in my melon for about a day and kept saying to myself "I'm drawing a blank on this one"(I was literally saying this in my mind). Since my strong point is Illustration I wanted somthing to reflect that, but just kept drawing a blank. So I said "I'm just drawing a blank" in my mind enough that it clicked that that was as good a name as any so I decided to use it as my screen name.

Mine's a reference to an Atari Teenage Riot song. I thought it was clever.

My last name starts with a G, I am a man and I was born in 79. Perhaps I should have approached my alias in a more creative fashion. Oh well. Is it Firday yet?

Mynock
06-16-2005, 02:18 PM
As some of you probably know or don't, the mynock (http://www.starwars.com/databank/creature/mynock/) is critter from episode 5. I chew on power cables. I inhabit the Hoth asteroid field

Leathery-winged manta-like flyers, mynocks are a common pest faced by spacers. The parasitic creatures attach themselves to hosts via their bristly suction cup-like mouth. Pilots need to examine their ships for mynock infestations as the creatures like to affix to starships and chew on their power cables. Mynocks travel in packs and typically grow to be 1.6 meters long with a wingspan of approximately 1.25 meters.
www.starwars.com (http://www.starwars.com)

Mynocks are vermin of the spaceways, able to drift through the hard vacuum of interplanetary space but lustfully attracted to the warmth and power of passing starships. Physically they consist of a limbless slug-like body about a metre long, with leathery delta wings. The head consists of little more than two rounded eyestalks and sucker of about twenty centimetres' diameter for attachment to starships or other sources of food.
www.theforce.net (http://www.theforce.net)

It was a screen name I chose a long time ago when I was in aol chatroom, text role playing I guess is what you call it.

P.S. I am also a LOTR nerd too.

My name is Ben. When I worked at Super America during high school I made my name tag say Neb. There was actually a customer who thought it was my real name. After that my friends started to call me Neb. One of whom would always yell out "BIG BALLER NEBALLER!"

keith1
06-16-2005, 02:57 PM
Mine is very complicated to explain. My name is really Keith and I choose keith as my alias since it was my name. Uncreative you say? I say genius. Everyone would think is just my alias when it is really my real name. Clever huh? Well where did the number 1 come in? This is where it gets very clever, it just happened by itself. I did not add a "1", the forum automatically added a "1" so there must have been a keith0 or plain keith. Strange isn't it? (twillight zone music starts up)

Lonepine
06-16-2005, 02:59 PM
I'm really tall. In high school I played basketball. I was much taller than the other kids. The coach nick-named me Lonepine because I stood out so much among the other players in the middle of the b-ball court.

that's funny, in high school I actually learned how to write notes in elven and dwarven script from the hobbit and LOTR. I don't think I can do it anymore, tho...

Anyways, Dane is my first name. Dawg was my nickname in high school. 99 is the year i gradumated said school.

D-Zine
06-16-2005, 04:39 PM
Everyone thinks (I think) that my name is D-Zine (pronounced design) BUT in fact, its not. It's D-Zine, pronounced as D-zeen.

I chose that name because at the time of signing on to GDF I was working through thoughts of starting a small child-parent publication / magazine. So I took design + magazine and made D-Zine :D I still have thoughts of doing the magazine, one day.

but anyways...that's how I got my name :)

Welp, my screen names are usually No_Mans_Stang (double meaning, I had souped up mustangs all of my life and guys would always pull up at red lights and ask me "is that your man's/bf's stang & cause I am no man's stang.lol) or SOM_of_a_Beach (cause my Transam WS6 is sunset orange metallic in color, which is a rare color and I live in miami where people talk with a thcik hispanic accent.)

So any ways, obvisouly I didnt think those would work here so, I chose VisulaizeDesign. Its the name I gave my corporation/email/domains, etcI really liked Image by Design, kinda like I create your company's whole image (full scale marketing, some p.r. and design stuff as well) and then design it. But the web site was taken so, I just picked VisualizeDesign cause my accountant was hounding me for a name. Cause I like to take time and sit their to visualize what ever i am doing before I do it.

I also think its kinda wrong but funny that the initials are VD.

My 6-year-old little brother has a speech impediment--he had a tongue tie which prevented him from pronouncing syllables correctly (he goes to speech therapy now for help). He couldn't pronounce my full name, Michelle, so he'd just call me "shelle" or "b'shelle". Add "belle" to make it rhyme and there you go. It's become my nickname at my mom's house. It's pronounced "shell-bell."

Incidentally, my dog's name is Belle. But we usually call her Belzebub.

And I read D-Zine as "Dee-Zeen." Weird.

MD

Well I was going to use the Quenya translation of my actual name, but it was taken by Morea. So I chose Milwaukee Designer
"Milwaukee" originally an Algonquin term meaning "the good land." and
"Designer" my profession - how clever am i?
I later shortened it to MD because I could.

A few months back I had just donned a pirate avatar and was going to temporally change my nickname to a stupid pirate nickname - I clicked submit but the server was down because of the forum changeover. If I had been a few seconds faster my nickname would have permanently been "Booty Bandit"

Mine was extremely complicated and to understand it's origin you are required to have undergone rigorous studies in quantum physics, genome engineering, and biomimicry. I begun with my last name, then I did something, then I added the number "1", and presto.

A lot of people mispronounce my last name upon reading it. Everyone thinks it's said like "Roober" or "Ruber" like "Goober" or "Uber"...it's actually "Raybur". It's a German name, a variant of Raeber. I honestly had zero ideas when coming up with a name.

For some reason I like Pandas. I think I like the word more than the actual animal.
I also like the color blue.

"BluePanda" was taken, so I chose "TheBluePanda"

I'm not the only person on the internet that goes by this alias, and I don't like that, so I'll probly change it when I find something more original.

In my former internet life, I went by the alias "KidTokyo", and was the only person to have that alias. But I'm not a kid anymore, and I'm not obsessed with Tokyo anymore, so it got old.

Mine stems from high school. I used to draw superhero farm animals in a comic strip. They were all conspiring to run away from the evil Farmer John. Rather silly, but they're still pretty funny to this day.

Since I later found out that my principal character, Superchicken, was already taken in form of a cartoon (I've still never seen it), I resorted to my secondary character, Rocketpig.

And that's how I ended up registering www.rocketpig.net as my domain and named my business The Rocketpig Studio.

From there, I think you can all figure out how I came up with my screen name.

Dunno if any of you will find my story either funny or interesting - but for me when i was young i found it hillarious.

My friend and i aged 17 where experimenting with weed and got real high. i had a shirt tied round my waist at the time till we got on the buss to go home.

while we were in the bus laughing at absolutly everything - for we were high - i noticed my shirt was gone and got a bit bummed by the fact.

Getting off the bus my friend noticed the shirt attached to the bus and we both thought it was astonishing that it had survived the 40 min journey. we took it from said bus and noticed it was perfect - not dirty, not torn nothing. from that moment on it bacame my magic shirt - more laughter ensued.

i started using it as an online alias from then on - i'm 25 now and each time i tell that story it seems less funny to the reciprient - you had to be there:D.

LeftBrain Artist
11-29-2005, 04:04 PM
Hmmmmmm. My alias is my real name. Serious. I've had a hell of a reputation to live up to though. Creating art with the left halves of brains is difficult at best. The finished artwork doesn't keep well in hot, humid climates - which is why I live in Wisconsin. The brushes are super hard to clean. Brains make a poor modeling compound for sculptures, they never want to stick to one another. And then there's the problem of getting them, a chore to say the least - even more so since my main source (we'll just call him J.D.) is gone. And then there's the problem of holding exhibts - the secrecy, the fights, the running from the police - its getting to be too much.

I've always been good at math and science - and am a pretty decent artist as a result of strength in those areas. I've known a lot of artist types, and can tell you they're out there. What gets me is a lot of them see being a basket case as a result of being a good artist - as if that entitles them to be a screwball.

Hmm wondering about your logic on that one.... Math and Science are left side of the brain, which is more of an analitical, numbers, words, and etc... To where your right side is the more "artistic" side where it's dealing with the whole of an object, and mainly dealing with things in shape, color, and etc...

Yo D Lucks.

I tend to do realistic drawing, painting, and sculpture - being highly analytical and strict adherence to an established process is the foundation of my methodology for creating artwork. A lot of people can't attribute success or failure to their art using objective terms, instead relying on a feeling, or intuition to determine whether or not their project has been a success. I did several times experiment with the aesthetics of mathmatics as applied to artwork with some success too. I alway thought right brain procedures tended deal more with emotions and intuition and the left side was traditionally associated with logic and reason. Since I primarily use logic and reason to determine how shapes and colors interact, instead of feeling or intuition, I always kinda thought I was using what's traditionally seen as being left brain procedures. Blah blah blah. Just thought the name sounded clever.

Just checked this out, kinda neat

DAAANNG! There's a RPG from the past. They still printing stuff for that?

Yeah, though it's not published by FASA. WizKids bought the rights, and license it through FanPro here in the US. They just published the 4th edition of the rules, the timeline has been advanced to the 2070s. I don't like the new rules, they changed a lot of what drew me to the game in the first place.

....

Wow, that was some hardcore geekery. *goes to get the mop and squeegee*

A couple years ago I was just trying to come up with a new screen name (my old name that I have had since I was 15 was "sunhugz"....i still have to keep that for some things so that I don't have to tell everyone that my name has changed (too much work)..SO...I picked something that was similar to my real name without being my name. It came out of an Art History book, so being an art major It felt appropriate. It's some italian name or something.

my GDF name is the Quenya translation of my actual name.

There is a place in LOTR called moria (more-ee-uh), which is similar, but means (roughly)"dark place".

The Mines of Moria!!! very dark indeed! How I loved reading that part. I'm a huge LOTR fan. (dont know quenya, though maybe you can teach me?)

Read the triology + the Hobbit and Silmarilion. I must say the Silmarilion rivals my love for The Fellowship (my favorite of the books) Such epic stories, its like the genesis for Middle Earth. Awesome stuff!

I might've posted here before, but we'll pretend I didn't.

"JaCkinbOx" is a shortened version of jack-in-the-box. It's based off a character I designed many years ago that I've grown attached to. The "C" and the "O" are capitalized for style and balance; no other reason. The character today simply goes by JaCk, but my online alias remains the original.

That's the gist of its history.

My story isn't humorous. So, just replace every 8th word with "poop" and it may actually seem entertaining.

I finished off a 6 year enlistment in the Army and came home to discover that all of my old friends were doing a lot of online gaming. It had gotten to the point that they went by their gaming nicknames when they hung out. They convinced me to come up with one.

I was in tactical communications in the military, and the term "Echo Six" stood for having six bars of signal strength on our line-of-site encrypted network. We would reply to the opposite end that we had an "echo six" after we finished setting up. So that phrase basically meant everything was good to go, and we could move onto to pulling shifts and playing cards.

I just changed the echo to eko and have been using it for all of my usernames. I've even played around with using it to identify my free-lance work (if I ever have to time).

So...yeah the poop thing was a good suggestion.

senjula
06-22-2006, 09:49 PM
Senjula is a word I got out of a dream about 7 years ago now. For the longest time I was recording my dreams and doing some studies in Lucid dreaming. It got to the point that durring my sleep I would actually start writing in my bedside notebook and not be aware of it....Anyhoot in one dream sequence I was climbing a rocky hillside hiding out from some kind of future world army troops...I came to some vines drapping over a rock face, when I pulled them back I saw the word Senjula carved in the stone. Then when I woke up I had written it out about five times in my notebook durring the night. I researched the word for sometime after and realized it had no purpose or meaning anywhere so I gave it one.

It Became an obssesion for about three years straight, when you start to focus on them it really does become an alternate reality in every sense. I eventually got to the point I was recalling 6-7 dream sequences a night in quite the detail. I also went into a creative overdrive at that point, drawing and writing short stories.

Senjula was one of seven words that I never found meanings for that I had recieved in similar fashions. Eventually I had to stop, people started thinking I was going over the deep end, especially when I was calling plane crashes a few hours before they would happen. I still have all my journals they would make quite the sci fi movie script. My dreams always involved end of world type scenarios and other planets...But reality took back over, now I am lucky if I recall a small glimpse of a dream once or twice a month....

well, when I was working in a shipping department a number of years back they decided that they wanted to give us cutesy little cards to put in the packages we shipped out as a way of bringing personal acountability into our department...

they had little fun phrases made up for each of us and I said "no, that's dumb, i'll make up my own" knowing I was going to do something even dumber... so When I submitted to the company's copywriter it said "This package was shipped to you by a RockStar, Colonel Brent"

So now I use colonel for a lot of my online stuff and actually a friend of mine actually calls me colonel.

Epectasis...well, that'd be the name of my company.

Epectasis is ancient greek for: "Creative activity".

Fits the bill i find :)

It used to actually be: Caelestis Epectasis. In this case, Caelestis is Latin for "heavenly, celestial...or even God" lol. Since i found that to be slightly too tacky, i ditched it...but it does have a nice ring to it though...Even though i know people would not bother pronouncing it properly and it might be too much of a linguistic leap...

As for the avatar...well you'd have to dig up some news on the board about this guy who walked around from house to house telling people they might have ticks and they had to get naked to get cleaned...pretty clever fellow :p

When I was taking Philosophy 101, I had to write a paper on confucious. When I joined a forum, confucious is what I had stuck on my brain. Since confucious is not always available, I had to add my area code 626 at the end. So on all the forums I join, I use confucious626. The avatar I use is just the first gif I ever created.

By the way, this is my first post.

Satchel
09-01-2006, 06:17 PM
Wow, I never responded to this question... or I'm high and missed my post as I scrolled through?!

Satchel: I got into the comic strip get fuzzy - I used to look foward to my lunch breaks so I could read the newest one. Satchel is the dog, satchel pooch to be precise. Then I started using it for my screen name on SoCom2 and it kind of evolved to LickMySatchel (which I used for my team-killing name) I didn't think that was appropriate so I just cut it back down to plain old Satchel.

And there you have it.

At least the inmates around here let me think I am. "Six" is the suffix on military call signs, indicating the commanding officer of that unit. I figured that sounded better than "Boss" or maybe "Jerk".

Clinically insane grandmother bought a rubber chicken for me for my 14th birthday!!?! Said chicken was named Frank. Best mate decided to torture Frank and over the course of several weeks covered him in glue and feathers, fake blood, beheaded him and eventually stick him the the ceiling of our garage. In the process of rescuing Frank I fell from a chair that was on top of a table and broke my wrist. On arriving at Uni and finding I was in a 7 room flat with one other person by the same name, my mate volunteered the name of the chicken as a temporary substitute for my name and the other flat mates liked it and stuck with it. Very odd sequence of events. another common variation seems to be frankster gangster or frankius Maximus (it's my freinds that are odd, not me!) Makes for a nice login name though

Riya
09-23-2006, 08:26 AM
It's my name, really. Or part of it anyway. My name is Maria, but it's not pronounced like the Spainish name (mah REE ah). Maria is actually the old Celtic spelling of the name Mariah (Mah RYE ah) (yes, like Mariah Carey, no, I don't sing, and no, I don't know why those are the two most often asked questions when I talk about my name). It is from the song "They Call the Wind Maria".

When my nieces and nephews first started talking, they dropped the first syllable and just called me Ria. It caught on and all of my friends and family started using it.

I added the y in Junior High as part of a joke that I don't even remember anymore. Something about being able to tell a cheesey fanatasy story by the number of characters with y's in thier name. And it just kinda stuck.

For the longest time, Riya was a unique name. The only thing that came up in a google search was references to the middle-eastern city Riyadh, and they were all in Arabic. I meant to go out and register the domain name riya.com before someone else jumped on it, but I didn't and that site REALLY SCARES ME, so now I need to find a new name.

Botchup
11-15-2006, 12:17 PM
I did a few comic strips of "Botchup The Magician" and his various mishaps in his job, when I was in year 6 in 1989.

It eventually evolved to "Botchup The Magnificent" and to this day, when I found this forum and needed a handle, this is what 'popped' in there. I just shortened it to the name, but feel free to use my proper title. ;)

And also everyone talks about danger in the world; wars, riots, natural disasters, death, but when you go down the ranking of disasters notch by notch... you'll eventually get to... the Botchup.

Fear me! I could be right around your corner! ;)

Who would have thought, a character I created would come back to haunt me in my career as an adult. It's uncanny! And yes I've had a few Botchups in my time...

At the same time I bought a cute little hand trained budgie/parakeet (He thinks he's a big bird stuck in a little bird's body.) I named him Derfel, needless to say between the 2 of us, we shortened it to "Derfie". Derfie has picked up quite the vocabulary over the years, he's one tough little guy.:D

When I was a young boy, I would go almost every weekend to the library and rent the "How to Draw..." series of books by Lee J. Ames. I literally had notebooks full of drawings from his books. One of the characters in the book was called Mike The Vike. I thought it was so cool that his name was Mike, since my name was Mike, and I've pretty much been using the name MikeTheVike since I could use the internet, haha

I'm willingly stuck with this user name. It all began when I had to use Yahoo Messenger. I didn't sign up for months b/c I wanted a cool name. My friends told me to just sign up, then I can change my name later on. Then I used this name for other forums so I could remember.

It's very uncreative: my dog's name is boo-boo bear, but that was taken. Years ago I had a cool name, blu3_skyz, but forgot my password. So I just combined the two.

Miss Bone is my actual name. All of my professors in school called me this, then my friends started so it stuck. It's just Bone- like wishbone, funny bone, tail bone. There's no French pronounciation like Bonet. Yup...It's just Bone. I love it now but Junior high was hell! LOL

SpugNothuson
04-10-2007, 05:55 PM
The meaing behind SpugNothuson.

Spug: For anyone old enough to remember Byker Grove, probably only on in the UK, the original series had a young, extremely annoying ginger girl in it called Spuggy. As my beard is Ginger it made complete sense to my workmate to refer to me as Spuggy, this was eventual shortened to Spug.

Nothuson: As an avid MMO gamer, I've played many many games, the one thing that I used to strive for was a name that meant something to me, yet hadn't already be used by every geek and his dog. Whilst flicking through many, many dictionaries and translation websites I came across Nothus (extra points for anyone who can find its meaning). I existed as Nothus for many years in many guises, this was later expanded to Star Wars Galaxies where for a change in the MMO world you could have a forname and a surname. Not wanting to tarnish the creation of Nothus and saw this as a progression into the next form of his online existance I took the surname Nothuson (obviously meaning the Son of Nothus).

I have existed as SpugNothuson for around 5 years now, and in some places the name is FEARED!

hmmm well my name came from a night of drinking and partying. i was rambling to my friend about something random and spurted out typically talking. for some reason i remembered it the next day. from that i got typically typing which became my portfolio site. shortened it up to typically when i got xbox live and have been using it for about 3 years now i guess. so typical =]

Hmmm, short story is, she's the artist, I'm her dad.

Long story is, my teen-age daughter is artistic, I'm her father. She has been drawing ever since she could hold something in her grubby little paw and make a mark. She had gravitated to working on the computer quite a bit (somewhere I've got some drawings she did in Paint when she was in 3rd or 4th grade). I joined this forum just to see what she might have in store for her if she goes into some form of this biz. It's been quite entertaining/informative/confusing...

digizan
04-11-2007, 04:23 AM
I've been using my alias for a l-o-n-g time.

I fell hopelessly in love with computers when I got my first one circa 1992 (an old 286 that ran on DOS). Throughout the 90's I had lots of Iranian friends and picked up a little Farsi (Persian).

When got started with the internet stuff I needed an alias to use. The "digi" part is a reference to my love for computers and the Farsi word for woman is "zan", hence digi + zan = digizan. It got shortened to Digi by friends over at the About.com GD forum.

Rain
04-17-2007, 12:30 AM
I go by the name 'Rain' both here as my post name and in the real world. I changed it about 20 years ago when I realized that NO non-french person could possibly pronounce my name. Even though they are both pronounced the same, the French spelling is Reine (meaning Queen, and don't forget to roll the 'rrrrr'). I'd be waiting to be called etc and would not reply to very odd versions of pronouncing my name, so I now spell it phonetically. To tell you the truth I'd rather be a weather report than a stuffed shirt. Now the problem I get, is if the person sending me stuff via e-mail or snail mail or just reads my name they just asaume that I'm a Mister - wrongo. I'm the XX chromosone, female.
As to how I got stuck with the name 'Reine' in the first place? Well I was named after a great aunt who had lots and lots of money and no kids. My mother thought that if she named the first granddaughter in the family after her she would be in the old ladies will (Inever met the woman). All to no avail, my great aunt left all her money and her very large estate to her large collection of cats. I wish I would have been able to know her, she sounds like a great lady.
