After many hours of interviewing for a f/t position, the company proposes that they hire me as a freelancer on a high-profile litigation case (as a graphic designer).
They say that they cannot afford to add one to the "head count" this month.
They why would they have interview for a f/t spot all along?
I think they tried to pull the "bait and switch" on me. Freelancing may be a way for them to put me on a trial-basis, while avoiding the cost of hiring. Seems dishonest to me.
What do you all think?

Funny thing is that during the interview process, they took pride on things like requiring loyalty and committment to the company, since there would be an incredible demands on my time.
Then they change the tables around and propose a freelance "trial" period to work on a high-profile job. This kinda shows me that they are probably not sure about me, and do not want to make the committment, or need to fill an immediate need temporarily, while they find a better candidate.
Whatever the case is (on their part), it raises a red flag in my mind about their intentions and puts a dent on their integrity.
Sorry for the rant. I'm a bit disappointed.

Because your freelance you can ask for a bit more compinsation because you are not an employee around there and you do not get the benifits....
Atleast that is what a lot of freelancers around here do, not in the GD profession, but it still should be the case.
And if they do want to hire you with the whol pile of benifits your salary goes down!!!

i noticed a similar thing, and it was never really clear what the final thing would be for this last job went to. in the end they said they choose another canidate FT, but they'd like me to freelance with them!? weird, but I hope they truly mean it, cause I like their work and could use the extra money

Sounds like they did pull a bit of the bait and switch, or they misrepresented themselves when they advertised the position.

Here's a quick update:
They made me an offer today. It has the marks of a low-ball offer. I thought it was funny that they knew my salary range and didn't even meet my minimum. But still I was diplomatic about it and requested 24 hours to "think it over".
Tomorrow, I will counter and see how they respond. Perhaps this just isn't the place I'm supposed to be.
