I would suggest DreamWeaver over GoLive.
You are a designer, so color shouldn't be a problem. Don't make it too bright or too dark.
You want to keep you navigation in the same place on every page so you visitors don't get lost.
Verdana (Geneva for Mac) is basically the standard font for text on the Web. Then you can use other fun fonts to liven up the rest of the site. NEVER use Times New Roman.

Ohh wow why never use Times New Roman?

new times roman looks old school...
my advice for anyone starting in web is look thru the internet and find sites you like look for usuablity and design style.....
and dreamweaver is much better than golive...I have to use Golive at my internship and I hate it...
look at other car club sites and maybe they have some good ideas on content for the site...

you colors should not be to strong that they take away from the content of the site.....
i think everyone should have a couple websites in there portfolio because its good to have that knowledge in your 'toolbox'

i usually design at 750x550 (you pages can be longer but 550 is where the 'fold' is?
just be aware that if the site is to big for someone screen your logo will be cut off due to the screen scrolling to the right
and also your font blends a bit to much you dont want people to have to 'hunt' to find the navigation
important info (navigation and logo) usually dont go on the right just incase it get cut off by the screen
you solution is good but its the first thing that pops in my head also...look around at really good car sites the possiblities of this design are endless

780 is the max width you want to use. If it is 800 pixels wide, it will scroll vertically at 800 x 600 because of scrollbars. Vertical scrolling is fine, but if you are going to have a fixed box site, then 550 is a good suggestion.
