I say we put our GDF Librarian through her paces. See if she is as sharp as she was a year ago. We must challenge her, and see what she's got. :) A post scavenger hunt or something like that.

My List:
1. Patrick's first rant about his Crap Copy job
2. Post involving a zebra or zebras
3. Rant about how someone hates Publisher
4. A spec work post posed as a "contest"
5. A post that is dogs vs. cats

Congrats Morea!! This place wouldn't be the same without you. (voice starts trembling) You were the first to talk to me here and I just wanted to say thanks for welcoming me into this community with such politeness. (tearing up begins) :)

I'd like to know when this forum started and also who has been here the longest that is still active?

Aw, {{HUGS}} keith... to you and to your damned comic sans rainbow gradient bevelled logo (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8192) that I spent half an hour trying to politely critique that one day. :p

I would guess Allen would be the longest active member, because he put the whole place together. Some of the other longest-running-still-active-members would be benjo and Kool.

And it looks like GDF was born on October 6, 2002. http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3563

Sure, what the hell. It's slow today.

1. Patrick's first rant about his Crap Copy job

This is the first rant that started its own thread.
http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4189

I am the ten dollar graphic hooker

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've got a problem; maybe you can all give me advice and help me out.

I've well documented my problems with my particular mom-and-pop dinky print shop job that I cannot cut the shackles to, so I need not repeat all of that again.

Anyway, this is supposed to be a 'charge by the hour' place, or more specifically, I should say 'charge by the minute.' So if a job takes thirty minutes, it's thirty dollars, etc. Now since we're such a 'walk-in' place, I'm always tending to get way more recreation jobs (as opposed to original jobs or previously done jobs) than I should, and that greatly bogs down my section working against clients who truly need something original done. So lately I have been noticing a trend, some of these jobs that would take thirty minutes to an hour to recreate, customers have been getting away with only paying ten or fifteen dollars for them. This is a problem of course, if you need a decent analogy, then think just how a hooker that charges five or ten dollars for anything is going to feel the next morning. And since my employers have zero patience no matter how bogged the section is, you run into problems like this if customers know they can get ANYTHING from you for a measly price.

So I approached my employers on why typesetting amounts have been so low for so much and they told me if there was a reason that typesetting should be higher, just write it down on a note in the job folder and they'll update the typesetting. So that's what I did. If a job took more time because customers made frequent changes, I wrote the reason down and put the additional time. If they were displeased with the quality of a scanned in 'walk-in' job and wanted it recreated, I wrote down how much time that took and put it into the folder.

After a while, I got an incredibly fishy feeling in my head. So I started running off copies of my bigger problem jobs (larger typesetting) along with my typesetting adjustment notes with the plan to accumulate some tickets up and check their PrintSmith system to see if they really have been reflecting the additional time. This morning I figured out the system and checked, and I'm shaking with so much anger right now it's not even funny. They have been lying; NO ADDITIONAL TYPESETTING has been reflected on ANY of them. So basically, customers can get away with an hour's worth of work here for a measly ten dollars. Once again, ten dollar hooker analogy.

Of course, you may ask why typesetting is reflected beforehand. I asked this once too, and they said they needed to put some amount in before the job was entered into the system, and they told me they would add the real typesetting based on my input. I can see they've been lying to me just to get the work out of the way.

Now I've figured out EXACTLY how to manually update the typesetting in the PrintSmith system, so it wouldn't be very hard for me to pull up the invoice, change the typesetting, and hand over a new job ticket. (In fact, GD's should have that power)

But before I do anything, how would you all feel in my position? What would you do? (By the way, this is a family-owned place, making any sympathy for my cause nearly impossible by the employers)

To go one further, to all of you who work in graphic places, how do you go about charging your typesetting?

2. Post involving a zebra or zebras

http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1636

1) How about a photo of a huge crowd, like at a ball game...convert the color photo to greyscale but keep one or two people in COLOR to show that they 'stand out from the crowd'.
2) A line of cars with smoke coming off their spinning wheels as they rev up to race and then, in the middle of the line-up of cars, a guy in a track suit, kneeling like he's going to take off on a sprint
3) A herd of zebras running with one of them with colored polka dots instead of stripes

3. Rant about how someone hates Publisher

http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3156

WHO the FK designed this POS? GRRRRRR!! I'm tired of working with this POS artwork that ppl do at home in publisher bc they think they are some grand designer. http://www.spacespider.net/emo/violent045.gif

4. A spec work post posed as a "contest"

In this $150 contest, your task is to create a logo/front page for (a company) which is a gambling search PPC engine. The logo will be used in all types of corporate branding: business cards, collateral, website, t-shirts, etc.. The logo should be modern and clean, professional . Keywords to think about are, Hip, lounge, Casino, The letter C might be bigger than the rest?

5. A post that is dogs vs. cats

Yes, I'm a cat lover. Always have been, always will be. Dogs I can do without (even though I have one). Especially the one that lives down the street and comes to my house just to poo in my yard and leave.
