Okay, I'm prolly the ONLY one that doesn't know...but what purpose, exactly, does the "Adobefnt07.lst" file do for my Jaguar? They're EVERYWHERE!!

It's an Adobe virus.
Literally (almost).
Those things will eventually slow down your comp.
You can remove them manually
BUT DO NOT REMOVE THE adobefnt.db FILE!!!!

Or you can try DeepSix (seek it at VersionTracker.com), a freeware script that'll do it for you. (This is not an endorsement for DeepSix. It is available. It works for some people. Or it quits or appears to do nothing for others. Check system requirements, feedback, etc...)

Thanks! I really couldn't find a logical explaination for it. And, ya sure, stick it in with system stuff and it's gotta slow things down.
Have a safe and happy 4th!

Thanks for asking this, I always wondered too.

It isn't really a 'virus' except in the sense of writing multiple useless files to your hard drive. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with Illustrator (and to some extent InDesign) updating the font database. It was a bad bug in Illy 10 and seems to be a hold over into CS according to the Adobe forums. I still use 8, 10, and CS and have to remove those things all the time. I shoulda said they can cause Illustrator and InDesign to slow down or crash, not necessarily your system.

An even weirder one to see was the occasional Bloodtemp or MiniSport file that showed up in the trash after a crash with Illy 9. No one at Adobe ever answered any of the questions about what those were and, in fact, deleted them from the forum threads. But you can still find a reference to it in some of the mac forums.

It's a nuisance in Windows as well. Every couple of months I just do a search and delete for every Adobefnt*.lst to help preserve stability of the font system. PITA

I just ran a Find on my HD and found 41 copies. Are you absolutely sure I can just delete them?

I did a search and found over 400 and deleted them. (client fonts also) No problems so far.

Just don't remove the Adobefnt.db file.
