Ok, so I'm sitting in our lunch room eating my lunch. I'm about 15 minutes into a nice pasta salad when an OUTSIDE CUSTOMER walks into the office, right past the receptionist, past the traffic manager, and straight to my desk. When she didn't find me there she searched for me until she found me in the breakroom.
She actualy stood there with this look on her face like "why aren't you at your desk". She stood over me telling about this job she needed done RIGHT NOW, and expected me to get up and go do it immediately. Forget the fact that there are SIX other graphic designers who work here and know how to do it. NOPE, she wanted me to do it.
I couldn't even tell her no because my boss was sitting right next to me at the table.
Man that really burns my ass!!!

WOW. I couldn't have kept my mouth shut under those circumstances.
Actually, maybe I could... but only if I had picked up my lunch and walked right out the door without saying a word.

I know what this feels like - it truly does suck. The only way you can *really* get peace to have a decent lunch, is to get outta the office. Salespeople bug me at lunch, customers, I have to answer the phone...its like - lunchbreak - whats that? No such thing - UNLESS I leave the building!
Sorry bout that Idaho! Tell em to bugger off next time! Reguarless of your bossman :p LOL

I generally shut myself in the car when I am on lunch. That way nobody will find me in the building. Tough!
If your boss was present, why did he/she not notify the client that her actions and demeanour were inappropriate?
Bending over for a bossy client results in a little short term gain/convenience (possibly) but long term disrespect (certainly).
A possible reply in such a situation: "In order for me to do the best work, I need an occasional break and some nourishment... your work does deserve to be done well, doesn't it?"

I have no idea why my boss didn't say anything. Hopefully my boss will see that fact that I gave up my lunch to help this person as a feather in my cap so to speak.

I would have just pretended that I suddenly lost the ability to speak.
Then I would have thrown up on her shoes.

I agree with leaving the building. I used to have a job like that, no real breaks, no peace, leaving was the only solution. When I got a cell phone, I did not let them know it. If they have your #, then a Khan-like attitude from the Star Trek II will help, "Let them eat static."

This is the first time it has happened. That's why we have a receptionist and a traffic coordinator. They are the first and second lines of defense. Nobody has gotten past the traffic manager before.
I think we were all just to stunned to do anything about it. Precautions will be taken to prevent it from happening again.

Hey Idaho. When we improved our prepress department, I got my own office without windows and far from the huddled masses. Customers have a hard time finding me, but last weekend, an "Artist" (Not Graphic, Artist as in brush and paints...close to Photographers for being picky:rolleyes: ) needed to consult me and when her question couldn't be resolved on the spot, she demanded my home phone number so she could have her designer contact me over the weekend...4th of JULY weekend!! My boss was in the room too and pulled back from the conversation. I told her that I work 50-60 hrs a week, I'm only 49, I have 4 grandkids under 5 that aren't going to be grandkids under 5 much longer and if she thought her problem was bigger than my weekend life, maybe she should have got the job to us a week earlier. Needless to say, the job got printed on OUR time schedule and 99.9% of the people involved were happy.
Sorry for the demanding client...we could all use less of them.
weilding a large bread knife throughout the lunch break usually helps keep those pesky people away from you.

We I think of the precautions we could take to prevent this from happening I can think of three things that might deter people from doing this again.
1) Have a guard dressed-up like Ghengis Kahn weilding a large sword. If someone tries to bypass him they lose their head.
2) Have someone dressed like a doctor standing beside a sign that reads "Rectal exam required to move beyond this point". :)
3) A 3rd option would be to arm the graphic designers
Any of the 3 would work pretty well I think.

Instead of getting a guy dressed as Ghengis Khan, how about I volunteer for the position?

Back at Krap Kopy, I NEVER, EVER ate lunch there (except if it was too hot outdoors), I always drove to the park or the business area. Not so much because I would be disturbed (which I would be), but I couldn't stand being in the place longer than I needed to.

It reminds me of one of those wall signs I saw in offices years ago that went something like this, "Lack of planning and procrastination on your part does not mean an emergency on my part."

Lol! I like that. How cocky.
Thats annoying. Did she ask politely though at least? She wont earn respect if she gives none. You ever though that maybe she fancies you and frustrated that you've not been giving her enough attention? ;)

If weren't married I would probably consider giving her more attention but seeing as I am my wife might go all postal if she even thought I was giving the customer 'special' attention.

Where I come from, people like this are known as "yankees". There's a difference between Northerner and yankee. A Northerner is a resident of the northern half of America. A yankee is a jackass that can originate from anywhere (but usually from up north) that considers common sense inconvenient and anything that doesn't work out for them is everyone else's problem. Needless to say, they have no respect for kindness and will actually take offense and wonder what's wrong with you if you hold open a door for them.

I was born and raise in Indiana. Why is it that people from the South still use the term 'Yankee'? Folks up North where I come from don't call folks from the South 'Rebels' or 'Conferderates'. In fact they could care less where people are from.

When I lived in Savannah, I had a guy tell me that one day "the South will rise again."
And I told him that if it does, the North will beat it back down just like last time.
Needless to say, he was not amused.

Actually, my freshman year I lived in Hogan House (guys only dorm, corner or Barnard and Broughton). The building is no longer a SCAD dorm, as far as I know.
A couple of the professors that I had have since passed away (Dan Fantauzzi, Jim Alley). Very sad.
So that we don't derail this thread any further, you can PM me if you like.
