Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Image links to original, not collected folder
I have created a Quark file and placed image files, then collected for output including images, fonts, everything. However, when I open up the Quark file that is now in the collected folder, and check usage, the image links are to the original working files (where my original Quark file that I collected from is), NOT the images in the collected folder.
For example, when I'm working on a Quark project, I pull images from many various folders on our server. Then when I collect the file, I expect that all the links would reset themselves to the Pictures folder in the collected folder. But this is not happening, the links are remaining linked to all the many various folders still that I started with. This is quite troublesome.
I'm using Quark 6.1, Tiger, on a G5
Any ideas what is wrong?

Not a thing is wrong with this picture. Nothing at all. Welcome to Prepress.
We have to manually relink your images from the 'collect' folder when we receive your file. My favorite method of relinking client images is to chuck the Quark doc in the file with the images. That way it will open from the local folder it is in without having to be told. This is especially helpful when the client doesn't use collect and sends me every image on their hard drive...
What I like to do when MAKING a file is to rename the original folder then point Quark at an image in the collected folder. Since it can't find it's original folder, it will ask if you want to replace all missing links with the contents of the collect folder.

Nothings wrong, Anne.
Quark just does a darn good job of retaining it's path to the links. I've tried to bury the files in a couple of folders and darn if it still finds them.
Is there a way for you to copy the collected folder to your local drive and log off the network? Then Quark will link to the collected images. If you copy the Quark file to the Pictures folder, it should be troublefree.

Quark still won't link to the collected images unless you point it to or chuck it in with the images.
That's Weird Rick, but I only usually put a number at the end of the file name and that pretty much stupifies Quark as to where the file went...
Erm...unless, of course, you are keeping your original Quark document IN the folder with the original images. Move it outside if you are.

Anne,
Finally found someone with the same problem. Can anyone else reproduce this problem. I jumped right from 4 to 6.5 and it was easy to manually break and force updates of links. And, a collect used relink all collected images to the pictures file. Now it updates the links to the source files no matter what you call them or where there located. A real problem if you use the content tool to dble click an image to open original and make edits. Your editing ther source file not the collected duplicate-Yikes!

make a PDF? ;)
heh...sorry, I couldn't resist! Like PD said - welcome to Prepress! There really is no way for Quark to know where your images are unless you tell it. Updating the links doesn't take long tho if you kept them all the same original names and have them all in one folder.

Hold down the command key and go file>open, and that will force relink all images. The only use I've had for this is a pesky EPS file causing problems. I guess the best solution is to relink, like they said. Geez, what a pain.

There is a free extension from Durrent Software (http://www.durrantsoftware.com/) called "Break Picture Links". I was having the same problem too until I found it.

I expect that all the links would reset themselves . . .
Too funny.
